2011 Season - Vikings fall to Webster, Wash U.

Freshman Krista Watson had a grand slam and drove in all six of Augustana's runs Sunday, but the Vikings suffered a pair of losses at the Washington University Tournament in St. Louis, Missouri.

ST. LOUIS, Mo.-Augustana wrapped up play in the Washington University tournament Sunday, dropping games to Webster, 6-4, and Washington, 8-2. Freshman Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) had a grand slam in the first game and drove in all six Viking runs on the day.

Game One: Webster 6, Augustana 4

Trailing 6-0 heading to the bottom of the seventh, the Vikings made it interesting. Freshman Lauren Schneiderbauer (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) drew a leadoff walk and Jessica Peterson (Marian Catholic HS, Lansing, Ill.) and Christian Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) followed with infield hits to load the bases. That brought Watson to the plate and she blasted a grand slam off Gorlok pitcher Megan Lokey to cut the lead to 6-4. One out later, Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) and Jillian Gibbs (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) delivered back-to-back singles to bring the winning run to the plate. Lokey got pinch hitter Chaney Tambling to pop to first, but Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) reached on an error to again load the bases. However, Schneiderbauer flew to left to end the game.

The Gorloks took the lead with a single run in the second and four more in the third of Viking starter Ashley Yaros (Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.). The second inning run was unearned and the four in the third came on five hits and three Augustana errors. Webster added a run off Sarah Hintz (Leroy HS, Leroy, Ill.) in the fifth to make it 6-0.

Yaros went three innings and fell to 2-1 with the loss. Melissa and Jenna Nelson, along with Trojanowski, had two hits each. Lokey went the distance to get the win for Webster.

Game Two: Washington University 8, Augustana 2

Washington got four runs in the fourth inning to break open a 1-1 game and went on to the 8-2 win.

Watson gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, driving in Peterson with a single to center. The Bears answered right back, though, in the bottom of the inning, using a leadoff single and three base-on-balls by Sheldon Ritzheimer (Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) to even the score.

Washington broke it open with four in the fourth. The big blow was a leadoff home run by left fielder Alyssa Abramoski.

Augustana pushed across an unearned run in the fifth and then left the bases loaded in the top of the sixth before the Bears took advantage of three Vikings errors to put the game away with a three-spot in the bottom of the inning.

Watson and Jenna Nelson each had two hits in the game and Watson drove in both Viking runs. Ritzheimer went 3 2/3 innings and took the loss to fall to 1-4 on the year.

Augustana, now 6-8 on the year, will try to bounce back next weekend when they host the eight-team Augustana Invitational at Green Valley Sports Complex in Moline, Illinois. The Vikings will play two games each day on Saturday, March 26 and Sunday, March 27. The team's opener will be against Wisconsin-River Falls at 11:00 a.m. Saturday.
