2010 Season - Spring practice and clinic dates announced

Augustana football coach Rob Cushman is anxious to get started and spring practice for the Vikings will start on Monday, March 28 at 6:00 p.m. The spring season will conclude with the annual Augustana Coaching Clinic on Friday, May 6.

Rob Cushman is going to get his first look at his Augustana football team in the capacity of head coach in two weeks. The Vikings will kick off spring practice on Monday, March 28 and Cushman will put his team through 15 practice sessions before the spring culminates with the annual Augustana Football Spring Clinic on Friday, May 6.

“We are anxious to get started,” said Cushman, who was named as the head coach on Wednesday, November 24 after spending three years as the Vikings’ defensive coordinator. “Our players have had a great winter during the conditioning program and we are now looking forward to seeing them on the field.”

The NCAA allows Division III schools a total of 15 practice sessions in the spring and Cushman has announced his team’s schedule. The first practice will be on Monday, March 28 at 6:00 p.m. and a total of 15 practices will encompass 14 dates (there will be two practices on Saturday, April 2). All of the practices will be held on the Ericson Field turf. Area high school coaches are invited to attend any practice session during the scheduled times.

Concluding the spring portion will be the annual Augustana Football Spring Clinic on Friday, May 6 beginning at 4:30 p.m. The clinic will be held at Hanson Hall of Science on the Augustana campus and featured speakers will include Ian Shields, offensive coordinator at the United States Military Academy and Thomas Casey, defensive coordinator at Western Illinois University. The clinic will run from 4:30 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. and cost is just $15.00 per coach with a maximum of $75.00 per staff.

“We are really excited about both our spring practice and our clinic,” said Cushman, who will also unveil new offensive coordinator Zac Connors during the upcoming workouts. “I think we have put together a good group of speakers for the clinic and we are looking forward to a great turnout of area coaches.”

Mark Reade, the recruiting coordinator at Augustana, will handle all the reservations for the coaching clinic and he may be reached via e-mail at

Cushman has taken over a Viking program with an outstanding tradition that includes 21 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin titles, four NCAA Division III national championships, five Stagg Bowl appearances, 22 CCIW “Players of the Year” and 26 Academic All-American selections. Cushman had previous head coaching stints at Eastern Oregon University and Feather River College.
