In memoriam

Rev. Arthur M. Holmer '42
The Rev. Arthur M. Holmer '42 died on Sept. 1, 2010, at the age of 90. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, 114th General Hospital, England. After receiving a bachelor's degree in 1942, Holmer attended Augustana Seminary. He was graduated and ordained in 1949, beginning 50 years of service as a parish pastor.

He served First Lutheran Church, Harvey, Ill.; Gethsemane Lutheran Church in St. Louis, Mo.; and from 1962 to 1985 was senior pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, St. Charles, Mo. After retiring, Holmer served 10 years as visitation pastor at Bethany Lutheran Church, Batavia, Ill.

During his ministry, Holmer served on the Augustana College Board of Directors and on the executive board of the Illinois Synod of the Lutheran Church in America, providing leadership in the area of stewardship for the Synod. Holmer is survived by three children, including the Rev. Peter Holmer '72, and seven grandchildren.

Professor Harry Stelling Sr.
Professor Harry Stelling Sr., a member of the Augustana faculty from 1958 to 1992, died on Sept. 15, 2010. Stelling taught journalism courses, was faculty advisor to the Observer for many years and participated in Augustana's long relationship with Huazhong University in Wuhan, China, serving as a visiting professor of English. Working with East Hall Press, he published a collection of his poetry, Lay of the Land, in 1983.

Stelling is survived by his five children, including Lisa Stelling '88 Jokisch.

Upon hearing the news of his longtime colleague's death, Dr. Roald Tweet, professor emeritus of English, wrote this reflection:

Ralph Waldo Emerson said that "every word was once a poem." No one at Augustana took that claim more seriously than Harry Stelling. Harry was amazed by words; he even may have been intoxicated by them-individual words on a page, words before they gathered into sentences, poems or novels. He approached words the way a field geologist approaches an unusual rock along the trail. He would turn a word over, tap it, break it open trying to discover its story, what cultural glacier had deposited the word on this particular page.

It was his job, of course, to pass on to students the mystery of words, but words were also his playthings. He turned them inside out, reversed them, teased them until they teased back. When Harry had finished with a word, it was often, in his words, "mis-pliced." Harry Stelling shared this love of words with his colleagues in a stream of small epithets, poems and notes, enriching our own encounters with language.

Dr. Michael P. Nolan '77
Former associate dean and longtime faculty member Dr. Michael P. Nolan '77 died at his Rock Island home on Sept. 25, 2010, at the age of 54. He was married to Dr. Ann Ericson '80, an associate professor in business administration at Augustana.

Family members, colleagues, students and friends from the community gathered in Augustana's Ascension Chapel on Oct. 1 to celebrate Nolan's life. Augustana College President Emeritus Dr. Thomas Tredway '57, one of Nolan's longtime friends and colleagues, gave the invocation and welcome and also the benediction.

Eulogies from Nolan's four sisters, in addition to eulogies from classmates Jeff Baker '78, Dr. Daniel Gottschling '77, Diane Machatka '79 and Dr. Dag Blanck '78, and colleague Dr. Jason Peters, told the story of a curious boy who grew up to be a teacher and writer with a keen mind, wry sense of humor and infallible willingness to help others. Those who gathered to remember Nolan laughed and cried together as his family and friends shared favorite memories.

The following week, as the campus community continued to deal with Nolan's sudden passing, Dr. Jon Clauss, director of the Augustana Center for Teaching and Learning (ACTL) and professor of mathematics, dedicated the online ACTL campus newsletter to his friend and colleague. Here is an excerpt from Clauss' letter:

As I sit here in his old office, in the very chair where he spent God knows how many hours hard at work, I feel an obligation to pay my respects. He was indeed one of the kindest men I have known. He really would drop everything and offer a helping hand when asked. He was one of the most intellectually curious, rigorous thinkers that I have met in my lifetime-a true "liberal artist," a man to emulate on so many levels.

While I don't know quite how to pay him the respect that he deserves, I need to attest to the huge impact that he has had on my life. All who have participated in the journalism program, worked with the English department, the Honors program, the Reading/Writing Center, been a part of the Teagle consortium or the Adopt-a-School program should know what Michael Nolan did for this place. His impact on this college and on all the people that do or will call Augie home is a legacy that will last for many years to come.
