2011 Season - Christensen's school record tops first day

Junior Phil Christensen set a new Augustana school record in the weight throw at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship on Friday, February 25 in Bloomington, Illinois. Christensen placed third in the event with a toss of 60' 2 1/2", which is also an NCAA Division III qualifying mark.

BLOOMINGTON, Illinois - Junior Phil Christensen's (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) school record of 60' 2 1/2" in the weight throw highlighted Augustana's effort at the first day of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Indoor Track & Field Championship. Christensen finished third in the weight throw on Friday, February 25 at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Illinois.

There were six finals on Friday and North Central leads the team scoring with 90 points. Host Illinois Wesleyan is close behind Augustana  with 44 points in third place. Carthage (19), Elmhurst (12), Millikin (10) and North Park (4) round out the field.

Christensen unloaded with his 60' 2 1/2" monster toss on his very last throw. He erased the school record of 58' 4" set just two weeks ago (February 12) by his junior teammate Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) at the Augustana Open. Christensen's performance is an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark, narrowly missing the automatic standard.

Benning took fifth in the weight throw with a mark of 57' 8 1/4", which was also better than the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. In all, the first seven place winners in the weight throw eclipsed the national qualifying mark in the event.

Senior Patrick Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) finished third in the long jump with a leap of 21' 8 3/4". Senior Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.) took fourth, also recording a mark of 21' 8 3/4" and sophomore Mike Tovar (Mooseheart HS, Chicago, Ill.) was sixth at 21' 0 1/2".

The distance medley placed third with a time of 10:19.58 and sophomore Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was fifth in the 5000 with a time of 15:05.16.

Junior A.J. Nice (Christian Life HS, Caledonia, Ill.) and sophomore Colton Vankirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) tied for sixth in the pole vault as each cleared 14' 0".
