2011 Season - Vikings shine in final CCIW tune-up

Edgar Valle won the 800 at the Dubuque Open on Saturday, February 19 with a time of 1:58.66. He was one of nine event winners for the Vikings as they competed in one last meet before the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship on February 25-26.

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Veteran Augustana head coach Paul Olsen couldn’t have asked for more from his fifth ranked team in the final tune-up before the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship. The Vikings won nine events, set two field house records and added two NCAA qualifiers at the Dubuque Open on Saturday, February 19 in Dubuque, Iowa.

The Blue & Gold looked extremely sharp considering the competition was coming after a week of finals ending the winter team.

Junior Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) and freshman Nick Sinon (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) were the NCAA Division III national qualifiers with outstanding performances in winning their respective events. Benning, who has really come on in recent weeks, won the weight throw with a toss of 56’ 10 ¼” while Sinon captured the high jump with a leap of 6’ 8”. Both of those marks bettered the national qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III indoor meet, which will be held on March 11-12 in Columbus, Ohio. Benning also added a second place finish in the shot put with a mark of 46’ 10 ¼”.

Augustana athletes broke two A.Y. McDonald Track records and sophomore Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) had a part in both. He won the 400 in a time of :49.97, breaking the old mark of :51.28 set by Matthew Ziegler of Wisconsin-Platteville in 2010. Patton then came back at the end of the meet and anchored the winning 1600 relay team with a time of 3:22.24. The eclipsed the field house record of 3:22.84 set by Augustana in 2009. Patton was joined on the team by sophomore Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.), junior Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) and senior Matt Somers (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.).

Senior Patrick Zeunik (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) was a double winner, taking the triple jump with a leap of 45’ 9 ¾” and the long jump with a mark of 22’ 5 ¼”. Rindone won the 200 in :22.55. Freshman Edgar Valle (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) took the 800 in 1:58.66 and junior Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) led a one-through-six sweep in the 3000 with a winning time of 8:40.89.

The Vikings recorded one-two sweeps in four events. Senior James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) was second in the 400 with a time of :50.93. Senior Jason Langslet (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) was the runner-up in the 800 in 1:58.84. Sophomore Mike Tovar (Mooseheart HS, Chicago, Ill.) leaped 21’ 8” to take second in the long jump. In the 3000, sophomore Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) was second in 8:46.05. However, he had plenty of company as sophomore Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was third (8:46.12), junior Billy TenBusch (Prairie Ridge HS, Cary, Ill.) was fourth (8:53.53), sophomore Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) was fifth (8:54.37) and sophomore Kyle McNicholas (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) was sixth (8:57.32).

Senior Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.), coming off a pair of wins in a low-key dual meet against St. Ambrose just two days earlier, was fourth in the high jump (6’ 2”) and the long jump (21’ 4 ¼”). Junior A.J. Nice (Christian Life HS, Caledonia, Ill.) and junior Brett Bernatowicz (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) each cleared 12’ 11 ½” to finish tied for fourth in the pole vault.
