Ted McMillan earns All-America honor with second place finish in high jump at NCAA Division III national meet; Tom McIntire sets new school record in the weight throw; Vikings finish second at CCIW indoor meet

Ted McMillan (Erie HS, Erie, Ill.) finished off a tremendous freshman campaign under veteran head coach Paul Olsen with a second place finish in the high jump at the NCAA Division III national indoor track & field championship at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota on March 10-11.  McMillan’s jump of 6’8” also earned him All-American honors.  Tom McIntire (Galva HS, Galva, Ill.) and Jason Petit (Rochester HS, Rochester, Ill.) also qualified for the national meet.  McIntire made it to nationals in the weight throw and Petit became eligible in the pole vault.

The Vikings finished second at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin indoor track & field championships on February 25 in Kenosha, Wisconsin.  The team scored 118 points, falling to champion North Central, who finished the day on top with 195 points.  Augustana finished directly ahead of Illinois Wesleyan (92 points) and Carthage (91 points).

McIntire was the lone individual winner on the day, finishing first in the weight throw with a toss of 57’ ¾”.  His throw set a new CCIW record, breaking the old record of 53’ 5 ¾” that McIntire had set last season.  McIntire also broke his own school record of 55’ 9” (January 21 in Chicago, Illinois) in the process.

McMillan contributed runner-up finishes in the 55 hurdles (:07.91) and high jump (6’8”).  The distance medley relay team of Mat Fulton (Hersey HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.), Tony Bellington (Fenwick HS, Oak Park, Ill.), Logan Beausoleil (Warren Township HS, Gurnee, Ill.), and Jim Beatty (Antioch HS, Antioch, Ill.) also finished second (10:38.32).

The men’s track & field team won the Augustana Leif Ericson Invitational on February 4 and the University of Chicago Invitational on January 21.  On February 4, the Vikings crowned several individual champions.  Eric Schulz (Milton HS, Milton, Wis.) finished first in the long jump (20’ 3 ½”) and tied for the win in the high jump (6’ 0”).  Justin Kossack (Somonauk HS, Somonauk, Ill.) also had a 6’ 0” jump in the high jump.

Other winners for Augustana were Petit in the pole vault (14’ 2 ¼”), Eric Kuck (Walther Lutheran HS, Chicago, Ill.) in the triple jump (40’ 0”), Eric Oberlin (Hampshire HS, Hampshire, Ill.) in the weight throw (52’ ¾”), and Tim Frey (Hersey HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) in the 3000 meters (8:55.76).  The strong performances on this day allowed the Vikings to outlast Truman State 103-83 for the team title.

In Chicago, the Vikings used seven first place finishes to outdistance five other teams for the title.  Augustana finished the day with 160.5 points, defeating runner-up St. Joseph’s (140 points) by 20.5 points.  McMillan and Schulz tied for the title in the high jump each with a leap of 6’ 5”.  Wes Jackson (Annawan HS, Mineral, Ill.) won the pole vault (14’ 3 ¼”) and Joshua Branch (Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) finished first in the triple jump (43’ 3 ¾”).  Augustana also brought home individual titles from McIntire in the weight throw (55’ 9”) and Andrew Kubiak (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) in the 3000 meter run (8:53.32).  The 1600 relay team of Michael Lucchetti (Prairie Ridge HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.), Jay Watson (Oregon HS, Mount Morris, Ill.), Kyle Ekberg (Rockford Christian HS, Rockford, Ill.) and McMillan (3:25.46) and the distance medley relay team of Michael Nutt (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.), Yancy Gillespie (Kewanee HS, Kewanee, Ill.), Rob Hanauer (East Peoria HS, East Peoria, Ill.), and James Beatty (Antioch HS, Antioch, Ill.) (10:55.73) also recorded first place finishes.
