2001 Men's Indoor Track Review







Tony Bonucci (Princeton HS, Princeton, IL) earned All-American honors in the pole vault on Friday, March 9 at the NCAA Division III national indoor track & field championship. The meet was held at the Kolf Sports Center in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.


Bonucci cleared 15' 11" in the pole vault to finish in fifth place and earn the first All-American certificate of his career. Brad Parris of McMurry won the event with a field house record of 16' 10 3/4". Hans Schmidt of Wisconsin-LaCrosse placed second with a clearance of 16' 4 3/4".


Brian Miller (United Township HS, East Moline, IL) competed in the long jump and recorded a leap of 22' 6 1/2" in the preliminary round but that did not advance him to the finals. Craig Lawrence (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, IL) was seventh in his heat of the 1500 with a time of 4:00.93 and that was not fast enough to advance to the finals.


Also performing for Augustana, but not earning All-American honors, was senior shot putter David Dempsey (Sterling Newman HS, Dixon, IL). Dempsey, who is a three time NCAA Division III All-American, failed to make the finals in the shot with a toss of 52' 7 1/2" which eventually placed him in eighth.


For the first time ever the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin held an indoor championship event. Augustana won three individual titles and one relay crown en route to finishing second on Friday, February 23 at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois. North Central won the team title with 165.33 points while the Vikings of veteran head coach Paul Olsen placed second with 111.33 points. Carthage was third with 103, Elmhurst was fourth (42), Illinois Wesleyan fifth (32.33), Wheaton sixth (31), North Park seventh (25) and Millikin took eighth (17).


Brad Blake (Kewanee HS, Kewanee, IL) won the 55 meter dash with a time of :06.57, Bonucci cleared 15' 2 1/2" to finish first in the pole vault and David Gonzalez (Maine West HS, Des Plaines, IL) won the 35 pound weight toss with a heave of 13.95 meters. The distance medley team of Steve Wahls (Pontiac HS, Chenoa, IL), Tim Heisler (Prairie Ridge HS, Crystal Lake, IL), Chris Coon (Sterling HS, Sterling, IL) and Craig Lawrence (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, IL) won with a time of 10:25.88.


Besides winning the 55, Blake was second in the 200 with a time of :22.75. Joel Wietfeldt (Auburn HS, Auburn, IL) finished fifth in the 400 in :50.69. In the 800, Mike Bartlett (Highlands Ranch HS, Highlands Ranch, IL) was third in 1:56.28 and Matt Delagrange (Waubonsie Valley HS, Naperville, IL) finished sixth in 1:58.23. Lawrence was second in the 1500 in 3:56.98 with Wahls placing fifth in 4:02.85. Randy Bill (Bureau Valley HS, Buda, IL) was fifth in the 5000 in 15:40.89.


Brad Dahl (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, IA) cleared 1.88 meters to finish sixth in the high jump. Behind Bonucci in the pole vault was the sixth place effort of Lucas Brainerd (Dixon HS, Dixon, IL) at 14' 2 1/4". Ken Larson (Providence Catholic HS, New Lenox, IL) was third in the triple jump with a leap of 13.61 meters. In the shot put, Dempsey was second with a toss of 15.48 meters and Tyler Wright (Oregon HS, Mount Morris, IL) was fourth with a mark of 13.56 meters. Casey Myers (Pontiac HS, Pontiac, IL) finished sixth in the 35 pound weight throw with a distance of 12.39 meters.


The 1600 relay team of Brainerd, Bartlett, Wietfeldt and Brandon Vahl (Waukegan HS, Lindenhurst, IL) was second at 3:22.26 and the 3200 unit of Heisler, Coon, John Knudson (Joliet Central HS, Joliet, IL) and Brad Consentino (Lincoln Way HS, Frankfort, IL) was also second in 8:06.43. The 800 relay of Blake, Sean Tyson (Mount Carmel HS, Sauk Village, IL), Rick Engstrom (Seneca HS, Seneca, IL) and Derek Neal (Pekin HS, Pekin, IL) finished third in 1:34.05.
