2010-11 Season - Three-pointers key 76-66 win over North Park

Chris Anderson hit three of Augustana's 11 3-pointers and finished with 13 points to help lead the Vikings to a 76-66 win over North Park at Cavrer Center Thursday night.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Augustana knocked down 11 three-pointers Thursday night to key a 76-66 win over North Park at Carver Center. The Vikings had excellent balance, with four players in double figures, as they improved to 20-0 this season, equaling the best start ever by a CCIW team and breaking the school record for longest winning streak.

North Park started the game in a man-to-man defense, but after the Vikings scored the game's first seven points on a pair of Bryant Voiles (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) buckets and a Brian DeSimone (Buffalo Grove HS, Wheeling, Ill.) three-pointer, switched to a 2-3 zone for the remainder of the contest. NPU battled back over the next four minutes to tie the game at 8-all on a Walid Mouzaoui bucket at the 13:41 mark.

Chris Anderson (West Carroll HS, Mt. Carroll, Ill.) answered with a three for Augustana to regain the lead for good, but the Vikings couldn't put much distance between themselves and the visitors for the rest of the half. When Anderson drove the left baseline and threw down an emphatic dunk with 8:23 to go in the period, it extended the lead to 20-14 and another DeSimone three with six and a half minutes left gave the hosts their biggest margin of the opening twenty minutes at 26-17.

North Park got three-pointers from Nick Hoekstra and Shaun Collins to spark a 8-1 North Park run that cut the lead to 27-25 before Augustana got back-to-back jumpers from Drew Croegaert (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.), which included a three-pointer, to help push the lead to 34-29 at the break.

Collins and Voiles traded treys to open the second half and the Augustana lead bounced between six and nine points until a free throw by Kameron Norton (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) at the 12:19 mark finally pushed it to double figures at 48-38. It reached 13 on three occasions: first on an Anderson three-pointer (57-44) with 7:29 left, again on a pair of Norton free throws (61-48) at the 5:55 mark and finally at 64-51 on another Norton freebie with 5:03 remaining.

North Park answered four points from Collins, including another three, and a pair of Roshawn Russell free throws to narrow the margin to 64-57 with 4:06 left, but Voiles responded with his third three-pointer of the night and North Park never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Voiles led Augustana, now two and a half games in front in the CCIW race at 9-0, with 18 points to go along with six rebounds. Nelson added a double-double of 15 points and 10 boards. Anderson, who connected on all three of his three-point attempts, finished with 13 and Norton added 10. DeSimone added nine points on three treys as well and led the Vikings with six assists while not committing a turnover in 31 minutes.

The Vikings got open looks from beyond the arc all night against North Park's zone and connected on 11 of 23 (.478) to help offset a 36-32 North Park edge on the boards. It marked just the second time all season that Augustana had been outrebounded. The Vikings helped themselves by committing just seven turnovers, also.

Augustana will close out its regular season home schedule on Saturday, February 5, when it hosts Carthage in a 7:30 p.m. contest. Nelson, Croegaert, Voiles and Mike Avallone (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) will be honored on senior night.
