1999-2000 SWIMMING REVIEW
JAKE MILLER & WENDY ILLING NAMED MVP'S FOR SWIMMING
ROCK ISLAND, Illinois - A sophomore who was not even on the roster when the season started and a freshman who showed solid versatility were selected as the MVP's for the 1999-2000 Augustana College swimming and diving season. Sophomore Jake Miller (Monmouth HS, Monmouth, IL) didn't come out for the men's team until the season was a month old but he quickly showed his value. Freshman Wendy Illing (Carmel HS, Mundelein, IL) sported the top time in three individual events and was a member of three relay teams which recorded the best Augustana times for the season.
Under the direction of veteran head coach Dave Thomas both the Augustana men and women finished the year with 6-5 dual meet records. The women placed fourth in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championships with 258 points while the men scored 198 points and were sixth.
Both Miller and Illing were multiple winners in the team awards that were given out at the end of the season. In addition to the MVP honors, Miller was selected as the Sophomore of the Year while Illing was tabbed as the Freshman of the Year.
For the men junior Matt Hays (Champaign Centennial HS, Champaign, IL) was selected as the Junior of the Year and the winner of both the Leadership Award and the Greg & Jeff Heden Hardest Worker honor. Jason Sinclair (Dunlap HS, Dunlap, IL) was picked as Most Improved Swimmer and the John Farwell Academic Award winner. Aaron Shaffer (Oswego HS, Oswego, IL) won Most Inspirational and Team Spirit. Nick Waterson (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, IL) was Senior of the Year and Nick Tarpein (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, IA) was the Freshman of the Year.
Kelly Kile (Elgin Larkin HS, Elgin, IL) and Sara Reid (Rockford Guilford HS, Caledonia, IL) shared the Leadership Award on the women's side. Reid also picked up honors as the Most Inspirational and Senior of the Year. Kile also won the Team Spirit Award. Beth Goins (Resurrection HS, Chicago, IL) was the Most Improved Swimmer and junior Glenna Asmus (Fairfield HS, Fairfield, IA) was the Hardest Worker and Junior of the Year. Becky Hann (Franklin Center HS, Franklin Grove, IL) was the Diver of the Year. Sara Cowger (Marian Catholic HS, Chicago Heights, IL) was the Sophomore of the Year.
Augustana College ended the 1999-2000 swimming & diving season with the women's team placing fourth in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship and the men taking sixth. Veteran head coach Dave Thomas' crew scored 258.5 points on the women's side while the men scored 198 at the CCIW meet which was held from February 10-12 at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois.
Wheaton won the men and women's divisions, scoring 684 on the men's side and 637 points for the women. Illinois Wesleyan was second in both with 426 points on the men's ledger and 554 on the women's. Carthage was third in the men's race with 301 while Millikin was fourth with 226, North Central fifth with 205 and Augustana sixth with 198. For the women, Carthage was third with 274, Augustana fourth with 258.5, North Central fifth with 227 and Millikin sixth with 180.5 points. Neither North Park nor Elmhurst fielded swimming & diving teams.
AT THE CCIW CHAMPIONSHIPS
Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois on February 10-12.
DAY ONE HIGHLIGHTS: (Women) The diving duo of Mandi Scheuneman (Elgin Larkin HS, Elgin, IL) and Becky Hann (Franklin Center HS, Franklin Grove, IL) scored the best placing on the first day in the one meter event. Scheuneman was second with 211.5 points while Hann placed third with 191.85. Gretchen McDowell of Illinois Wesleyan was the winner with 253.20 points. The 200 freestyle relay team of Wendy Illing (Carmel HS, Mundelein, IL), Liz Woolsey (Rockford Auburn HS, Rockford, IL), Shannon Everett (Elgin Larkin HS, Elgin, IL) and Susan Harris (Riverside Brookfield HS, Riverside, IL) finished sixth with a time of 1:49.16. Sarah Reid (Rockford Guilford HS, Rockford, IL) placed ninth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:35.68. Harris was 10th in the 50 freestyle in :26.73 and the 400 medley relay of Everett, Mindy Slade (Lisle Township HS, Lisle, IL), Sara Cowger (Marian Catholic HS, Chicago Heights, IL) and Harris finished fifth in 4:32.50.
DAY ONE HIGHLIGHTS: (Men) The 200 freestyle relay team of Jake Miller (Monmouth HS, Monmouth, IL), Matt Hays (Champaign Centennial HS, Champaign, IL), Aaron Shaffer (Oswego HS, Oswego, IL) and Nick Tarpein (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, IA) was fifth in 1:33.57. Tarpein placed ninth in the 50 freestyle in :23.56 and the 400 medley team of Miller, John Krzyzanowski (Streamwood HS, Streamwood, IL), Hays and Tarpein was fourth in 3:58.25.
DAY TWO HIGHLIGHTS: (Women) The 200 medley relay of Woolsey, Slade, Cowger and Ellen Frederickson (Moline HS, Moline, IL) was fifth in 2:05.80. Illing finished fifth in the 400 individual medley with a time of 5:03.93, Glenna Asmus (Fairfield HS, Fairfield, IA) was sixth in 5:09.11 and Slade placed 10th in 5:20.09. Cowger was 11th in the 100 butterfly in 1:08.51. Harris recorded a time of 2:11.61 for ninth in the 200 freestyle and Kristen Will (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, IL) was 11th in 2:13.06. In the 100 breaststroke, Slade finished sixth in 1:14.14, Illing was ninth in 1:15.83 and Kelly Kile (Elgin Larkin HS, Elgin, IL) was 11th in 1:18.68. The 800 freestyle relay team of Asmus, Reid, Harris and Illing was fifth in 8:41.78.
DAY TWO HIGHLIGHTS: (Men) Finishing fifth was the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:46.74 was the team of Miller, Krzyzanowski, Hays and Tarpein. Hays placed eighth in the 400 individual medley in 4:49.71, Nick Waterson (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, IL) was ninth in 5:05.87 and Sean Heyer (Cedarburg HS, Cedarburg, WI) placed 10th in 6:04.44. Miller finished fifth in the 100 butterfly in :56.93 with Shaffer taking ninth in 1:01.93. Tarpein was seventh in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.11 with Hays finishing 10th in 1:07.01 and Waterson taking 12th in 1:08.19. Miller recorded a third place finish in the 100 backstroke in a time of :54.64.
DAY THREE HIGHLIGHTS: (Women) Reid was fourth in the 1650 with a time of 18:53.49, Asmus placed sixth in 19:16.48 and Will was ninth in 20:00.04. Harris finished 10th in the 100 freestyle in :58.83. In the 200 breaststroke, Slade was fourth in a time of 2:38.86, Illing finished seventh in 2:40.70, Kile was 10th in 2:50.31 and Kendra Everett (Elgin Larkin HS, Elgin, IL) was 11th in 2:56.86. Asmus was fifth in the 200 butterfly in 2:26.40, Cowger was seventh in 2:33.78 with Beth Goins (Resurrection HS, Chicago, IL) grabbing ninth in 3:05.92.
DAY THREE HIGHLIGHTS: (Men) Krzyzanowski placed eighth in the 1650 with a time of 18:23.29. Miller finished fifth in the 200 backstroke in 2:06.38. Tarpein stopped the clock at :50.44 in the 100 freestyle for an eighth place finish. Hays was ninth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:27.93 and Krzyzanowski placed 10th in 2:28.65. The 400 freestyle relay team of Miller, Shaffer, Krzyzanowski and Tarpein was sixth in 3:26.44.
AUGUSTANA HEAD COACH DAVE THOMAS: Dave Thomas just finished his 13th year as the head coach of both men and swimming at Augustana College and he is the winningest coach in school history for both teams. His dual meet record with the women is 92-18 and with the men it is 58-49.
