Kai Swanson named WVIK interim general manager

January  19, 2011

Kai Swanson has been named interim general manager of WVIK-FM, Augustana Public Radio. He will replace Frank Sundram, who has resigned. Swanson will serve as interim director while a search is conducted to fill the general manager's position.

"We thank Frank for his work and wish him well in his broadcasting career," said Augustana President Steve Bahls. "At the same time, we look forward to the completion of WVIK's strategic plan and the continued vitality of this essential service. We anticipate a national search to begin in the coming weeks and seek to attract a solid field of qualified candidates."

WVIK is a professionally operated public radio station, broadcasting at 90.3 FM in the Quad Cities, and at 95.9 FM in Dubuque, Iowa. Owned and operated by Augustana, the station broadcasts classical music, National Public Radio, and local news and public affairs programs for an 18-county area serving northwestern Illinois, eastern Iowa and southwestern Wisconsin. WVIK also operates the Augustana Public Radio Information Service (APRIS), a free reading service for persons with visual difficulty.

Swanson worked in both news and music at WVIK from 1986 to 1995 before continuing to serve in communications for Augustana in public relations and publications. In 2005, he became executive assistant to President Bahls. Last October, Swanson was named to lead WVIK's Strategic Planning Task Force, comprised of WVIK staff and supporters and charged with creating a strategic vision that helps ensures the station's continued vitality. A 1986 Augustana graduate, Swanson has maintained close ties with WVIK, including serving as host of its broadcasts of Quad City Symphony Orchestra concerts.

Sundram came to Augustana in March 2008 as only the third general manager since the station went on the air as a NPR affiliate in 1980. He replaced WVIK veteran Lowell Dorman, who had served as the station's general manager for five years after WVIK's founder, Don Wooten, retired as general manager in 2003.
