2010-11 Season - MacMurray win closes pre-Christmas schedule
|Senior Bryant Voiles scored 10 points, pulled down five rebounds and led the team in assists with three as Augustana moved to 8-0 with a 53-50 win at MacMurray on Monday, December 20.|
For 31 minutes on Monday, December 20, it appeared that 10th ranked Augustana was going to be able to name the margin of victory over MacMurray. Over the last nine minutes of the final men’s basketball game before the Christmas break the complexion of the contest changed completely and what had been a blowout was now suddenly in doubt. In the end, the Vikings of veteran head coach Grey Giovanine managed to come up with a 53-50 win over the Highlanders, who are coached by former Augustana assistant Todd Creal.
Senior Drew Croegaert (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) nailed a basket with 8:58 to play to give Augustana a 15 point lead (49-34). The Vikings had been ahead 29-16 at halftime and in the early going of the second period had pushed the lead to 19 (35-16) with 16:31 left.
Following Croegaert’s basket, however, Augustana would manage just four more points the entire way; baskets by seniors Bryan Voiles (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) at 5:57 and Kyle Nelson (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) at 2:54. The Highlanders were busy with a 16-4 run to close out the game.
MacMurray’s Brian Suckow hit a pair of free throws with :26 left to trim the margin to 53-50 and the Vikings missed the front end of one-and-one free throw opportunities twice in the remaining time but the Highlanders could only get one shot off. That was a three point attempt by C.J. McClellan with just one second left on the clock.
In the first half Augustana shot .545 (12-22) from the floor en route to the 13 point margin at halftime. In addition, the Vikings limited MacMurray to just .313 (5-16) shooting from the floor. The Augustana defense stayed the same in the second half as the Highlanders shot just .370 (10-27) from the field in the second stanza for a .349 (15-43) percentage for the game. However, the Augustana offense went cold and shot just .360 (9-25) from the floor. The Vikings also turned the ball over 23 times in the game.
Nelson led Augustana in scoring with 14 points on seven of 12 from the floor. He was joined in double figures by junior guard Chris Anderson (West Carroll HS, Mt. Carroll, Ill.) with 11 and Voiles with 10. The Vikings also claimed a huge 31-17 advantage in rebounding with junior point guard Brian DeSimone (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) leading the way with seven. Voiles grabbed five and Croegaert hauled in four.
McClellan led MacMurray in scoring with 15 points and Jerel Robertson was also in double figures with 12.
Augustana is now 8-0 on the season and will play Wisconsin-Stout in the first round of the St. Norbert Tournament in DePere, Wisconsin on December 29 at 5:00 p.m. MacMurray falls to 2-6 with the loss.
