2010 Season - Mago named to ESPN Academic All-District team

Johnny Mago was named to the ESPN Academic All-District team in football. Mago, a senior middle linebacker from Cary, Illinois, is a journalism major and carries a 3.78 grade point average. He leads the Vikings in tackles with 90 (38 solos and 52 assists).

Augustana senior middle linebacker Johnny Mago (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) has been named to the ESPN Academic All-District football team, it was announced today. Mago, a team captain for the Vikings this year, was a first team selection and his name will now be advanced to the national ballot where he will attempt to become the 135th student-athlete in Augustana history to earn the prestigious honor in the program that is run by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Although a bit undersized for a middle linebacker at 5-11, 215, there is nothing small about Mago’s game. He currently leads the Augustana defense in tackle with 90 (38 solos and 52 assists). He has seven tackles for losses totaling 31 yards and two sacks for 13 yards. He is third in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin in tackles and he has been the lynchpin of a defense that has held five of eight opponents under 20 points this year. The Vikings are giving up just 113.1 yards per game rushing and 274.9 yards of total offense each contest.

He has been named to the academic all-conference team in the CCIW each of his first three years at Augustana and last year he finished fourth in the league in total tackles. Back in 2007, as a freshman, he was named First Year Defensive Player of the Year for the Vikings.

During his career he has accumulated 197 total tackles (114 solos and 83 assists) with 17.5 tackles for loss and three quarterback sacks. He has four interceptions and four pass deflections as well.

Majoring in journalism, he carries a 3.78 grade point average and is a regular on the Dean’s List for academic achievement. He won a prize for documentary photography at the annual Augustana Fourth Estate Awards Ceremony in the spring of 2009. An active member of Athletes Giving Back, an organization devoted to community outreach by the Augustana athletic department, Mago volunteers at Church of Peace in Rock Island, Illinois where he teaches immigrant children the English language.

Mago was selected in District Five, which consists of NCAA Division II and III and NAIA players from the states of Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin. He will join the first team all-district honorees from seven other districts on the national ballot. Augustana currently ranks sixth in the nation in number of Academic All-Americans produced with 134 and the Viking football program has generated a total of 25 of those.

He is the son of Mike and Sue Mago of Cary, Illinois.
