Augustana’s 2010 men’s soccer season ended on Wednesday, November 3 with a 2-1 loss at Wheaton in the semi finals of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin tournament. The match was played at Joe Bean Stadium on the campus of Wheaton College.
Wheaton, which won the regular season in the CCIW with a perfect 7-0 record, scored the winning goal with less than five minutes remaining (85:41) in the match. It was ruled an “own” goal after the ball deflected off a Viking player and settled in the net.
After the match was scoreless at halftime, the Thunder got on the board first with a goal by Josh Clark in the 58th (57:57) minute. Drew Golz and Paul Pesek assisted on the play. The match stayed at 1-1 until the “own” goal in the final minutes.
Wheaton held a 15-11 edge in shots and a decisive 11-2 advantage in corner kicks. Augustana freshman Steven Zahrobsky (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) got just his second start of the 2010 season in goal and he recorded three saves.
