2010 Season - Early lead doesn't hold up in loss at Wheaton

Matt Shipon's goal off a free kick gave Augustana an early lead on Wednesday night but it did not hold up as the Thunder scored four times in the second half to post a 4-2 victory in CCIW action.

Despite holding a 1-0 lead at halftime, Augustana dropped a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin men’s soccer match to Wheaton on Wednesday, October 20 by a score of 4-2 in Wheaton, Illinois. The Vikings, who last year defeated the Thunder 1-0, grabbed a 1-0 lead by halftime only to see Wheaton score four unanswered goals in a 25 minute span in the second half.

Freshman Matt Shipon (Elgin South HS, Elgin, Ill.) put Augustana on top in the first half with a goal off a free kick at 30:42. It was his second goal of the season. That lead held into halftime and through the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Wheaton tied the contest at 55:42 when Drew Golz scored off an assist from Jordan Golz. Less than five minutes later (60:25), Dan Pavlak put the Thunder ahead with a goal off an assist on a corner kick from Josh Clark to make it 2-1. Golz got his second goal of the match at 65:46 with Ryan Seager assisting at 65:46 to put the lead at 3-1. In the 80th minute (79:55), Jason Lollar scored off a Paul Pesek assist to push Wheaton’s advantage to 4-1.

Augustana scored in the final minute (89:17) when Greg Maggio (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) picked up a goal off a failed penalty kick from Sean Fidlow (Carmel Catholic HS, Gurnee, Ill.).

The Thunder held a big advantage in shots (23-6) and in corner kicks (7-3).

Wheaton moved to 7-6-3 overall and 5-0-0 in the CCIW while Augustana fell to 6-9-1 and 2-2-0 with the loss. The Vikings will host Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, October 23 at 1:00 p.m. at Ericson Field. It will be “Senior Day” for Augustana.
