2010 Season - Augustana third in football coaches' poll

Senior running back Robert Wood, a 2nd team All-CCIW performer, is one of 11 returning starters for Augustana in 2010.

NAPERVILLE, Ill.—The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin has released its pre-season football coaches’ poll with Augustana pegged for a third-place finish. Coach Jim Barnes’ Vikings totaled 33 points—including one first place vote—to tie defending co-champ Illinois Wesleyan for third in the poll.

Barnes welcomes back 49 letter winners and 11 starters from last year’s team, which went 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the CCIW, tying Wheaton and Carthage for third place. Leading the way will be two-time conference Player of the Week David Lee (Springfield HS, Springfield, Ill.) at quarterback and second team All-CCIW running back Robert Wood (Rockford Boylan HS, Loves Park, Ill.). Other returning starters on offense are wide receiver Zachary McCullough (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) and linemen Mark Constantine (Waubonsie Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.), Kelly Clennon (Joliet Catholic HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Andrew Hansen (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.). On defense, the Vikings return end Curt Perschnick (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.), linebackers Brandon Holl (Batavia HS, North Aurora, Ill.) and Cody Wickenhauser (Tri-Valley HS, Downs, Ill.) and defensive backs Alex Schroeder (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) and Ben Hall (University HS, Normal, Ill.).

North Central, who shared the CCIW championship with Illinois Wesleyan in 2009, was chosen as the clear favorite by the league’s coaches. The Cardinals garnered 48 points and six first-place votes. Wheaton was predicted for second with 41 points and, like Augustana, received one first-place vote. After the Vikings and Illinois Wesleyan, Carthage was picked for fifth with 28 points. Millikin (21 points), Elmhurst (13) and North Park (7) rounded out the voting.
