2009-2010 Season - Carr named "MVP" for women's golf team

A year after winning "Most Valuable Freshman" honors, Brittany Carr earned the "Most Valuable Player" award after a strong sophomore campaign. She led the team with a 91.0 scoring average.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana women’s golf team announced its award winners and sophomore Brittany Carr (Lincoln Way East HS, Frankfort, Ill.) was named “Most Valuable Player” for the 2009-10 season.  Junior Jessica Berens (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) was honored as “Most Inspirational” and was also elected to serve as captain for the 2010-11 campaign.  Freshman Megan Vandersee (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) was named “Most Valuable Freshman”, and senior Katie Mascheri (Hersey HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.) earned “Most Improved” honors.

The Vikings finished seventh at the College Conference championship meet and finished with an overall record of 48-52 under 11th year head coach Ron Standley.  The season was highlighted with a third place finish out of seven teams at the Augustana Quadrangular to open the year and also by fourth place finishes in large fields at the St. Ambrose Classic and Augustana Invitational.

Carr led the squad with a 91.0 scoring average and competed in all 16 rounds on the season.  She had five top-10 finishes, highlighted by a seventh place finish in a 53 player field at the Augustana Fall Classic where she shot an 86.  Carr’s lowest round of the year came in the second round of the Mount Mercy Spring Invitational.  She fired an 84 to take 10th in the 54 player competition.  Carr also finished 10th out of 54 at the Augustana Quadrangular, ninth out of 33 at the Iowa Wesleyan Invitational, and 10th out of 62 at the Millikin Spring Classic to close out the year.

Berens made significant strides in her third season, improving her scoring average from 99.9 to 96.9.  She played in 15 rounds and had a best score of 92 in the final round of the St. Ambrose Classic.  Her best finish came at the Augustana Invitational where she completed her round with a 94 to finish 11th out of 52 golfers.  Berens had four top-20 finishes overall during the season.

Vandersee turned in a scoring average of 92.8 in 16 rounds of play during her first year with the Blue & Gold.  She had the best individual finish on the team, placing third out of 33 golfers at the Iowa Wesleyan Invitational.  She fired an 82 at the event, which was her lowest round of the season and the top round on the entire team.  Vandersee also had four more finishes in the top 10.  She was sixth out of 45 golfers at the Augustana Quadrangular, ninth out of 67 at the North Central Cardinal Classic, 10th out of 53 at the Augustana Fall Classic, and 10th out of 62 at the St. Ambrose Classic.

Mascheri received “Most Improved” honors for the second straight season after improving her average from 101.4 to 99.9 in 16 rounds on the course.  Her low score of the year came in the opening round of the St. Ambrose Classic where she shot an 88 and eventually finished 20th in the two round event.  Mascheri’s best finish was an 18th place showing in a 45 player field at the Augustana Quadrangular.
