2009-2010 Season - Viking Olympics Day One

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Senior Nate Maass (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) grabbed the lead in the decathlon and Augustana had three individual and a pair of relay wins on day one of the Viking Olympics Friday. Day two gets underway at 12:00 noon Saturday at Paul V. Olsen Track/Ericson Field.

Individual winners for the Vikings were senior Darin Decker (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.), with a heave of 169’ 9” in the hammer throw; junior Eric Chalus (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.), who cleared 14’ 7¼” in the pole vault; and sophomore Billy Wisser (Hersey HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.), who won the steeplechase in a time of 9:43.17.

Augustana also picked up wins in the 4x800 relay (7:54.52) and 4x110 shuttle hurdle relay (1:02.60--three-tenths off the school record). The 4x800 team consisted of Jason Langslet (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.), Dennis O'Flaherty (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.), Steve Rogers (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Greg Weigand (Wheaton Warrenville South, Wheaton, Ill.) and the shuttle relay team included Brendan Bradley (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.), Pat Callan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.), Marty King (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) and Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.).

Maass won three of five decathlon events on day one to take the lead with 2,989 points. He went 20’ 3¾” in the long jump, 5’ 10¾” in the high jump and ran a :54.48 in the 400. He was also second in the shot (32’ 0”) and third in the 100 (:12.04).

Wisser led a one through six sweep by Augustana in the steeplechase. Billy TenBusch (Prairie Ridge HS, Cary, Ill.) was second in 9:54.51 followed by Lucas Westblade’s (Will Carleton Academy, Hillsdale, Mich.) 10:16.91, Tommy Harris’ (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) 10:29.65, Pat Fritsch’s (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) 10:33.99 and Ryan Bertram’s (Neuqua Valley HS, Bolingbrook, Ill.) 10:47.35.

Viking freshman Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) narrowly missed a win at 200 meters. His second-place time of :22.16 was just three one-hundredths of a second behind Ashford’s Austin Gilbert. Nick Borchert (Ankeny HS, Ankeny, Iowa) was fourth and Max Peterson (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) fifth with times of :22.49 and :22.66, respectively. James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) (:22.91) and Devon Pace (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) (:22.95) finished seventh and eighth.

Colton Vankirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) cleared 14’ 7¼” and finished third in the pole vault while teammates A.J. Nice (Christian Life HS, Caledonia, Ill.), Alex Mikos (Fenton HS, Wood Dale, Ill.) and Ethan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) cleared 14’ 1¼”, 13’ 7¼” and 13’ 1½”, respectively, to finish fourth, fifth and eighth.

The Vikings had a pair of place winners behind Decker in the hammer. Adam Myers (Dixon HS, Dixon, Ill.) was fourth with a toss of 151’ 11” and Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) was fifth with a mark of 149’ 7”.
