2009 Season - 2010 football schedule will be tough again

After finishing the 2009 season with a 6-4 overall record despite playing a schedule that was judged by the NCAA as the 10 th toughest in division III, Augustana does not appear to have softened the challenge any for 2010. Veteran head coach Jim Barnes unveiled his 2010 football schedule today and the 10 opponents combined for an impressive 66-37 record in 2009 and a winning percentage of .641. Only two of the 10 opponents did not post winning records a year ago.

Adding to the difficulty will be the fact that the Vikings will only play four home games in 2010. Three of the opponents participate in post-season play in 2009, including two of the three in the non-conference portion of the schedule.

Augustana will open on the road at Greenville on September 4 with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. The Panthers were 7-3 last year and won the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference and played in the “Victory Bowl” in the National Christian College Athletic Association where they lost 29-28 to Geneva. The home opener will be on September 11 at 6:00 p.m. and the opponent will be the powerful Dutch of Central of Iowa. Central was 10-1 in 2009 and finished the year ranked eighth in NCAA Division III. The Dutch lost 42-40 to Mary Hardin Baylor in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. The non-conference portion of the schedule finishes on September 18 with a trip to Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan for a 1:00 p.m. (EST) start.

The always challenging College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin schedule begins on October 2 with a game at Millikin and the CCIW home opener will be with co-champion North Central on October 9. That will also be homecoming on the Augustana campus. Road games at Carthage (October 16) and North Park (October 23) follow before the Vikings come home on October 30 for a matchup with Wheaton. After a road trip to Elmhurst on November 6, the regular season ends on November 13 with a home game against Illinois Wesleyan.

All games will have 1:00 p.m. kickoffs except the family weekend home opener against Central of Iowa and the October 16 battle against Carthage in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Those games will start at 6:00 p.m.

A year ago Augustana’s schedule was ranked the 10 th toughest in NCAA Division III as opponents had a combined record of 58-34 for a winning percentage of .630. Barnes will be entering his 11 th season as the head coach at his alma mater and so far he has compiled an overall record of 73-30 (.708) and is an impressive 52-18 (.742) in CCIW action.
