2010 Season - Augustana drops season opener

CLERMONT, Florida – Augustana got a two-run double from senior Brittany Snoreck (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) and a two-run home run from junior Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) in the season’s very first inning but were unable to parlay the early lead into a win Saturday. The Vikings fell 6-5 to Oneonta State in Clermont, Florida.

Snoreck’s one-out double drove in Christina Trojanowksi (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) and Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) each of whom had received a base-on-balls from Red Dragon starter Jessica Iuliana. Snoreck then scored when Nelson ended Iuliana’s day with a blast over the center field fence. Jessica Bartalsky came on in relief and got Oneonta out of the first without further damage.

The Red Dragons cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the inning off Viking starter Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.). The keys hits were an RBI single by Katie Kraus and a two-run double by Aly Helstrom.

After Augustana missed a great scoring opportunity in the top of the fourth, Oneonta took a 6-4 lead with another three-spot in the bottom of the inning. Bethany Truax drove in the first two runs with a double to left-center and scored the third herself, coming home on a wild pitch by Gill.

The Vikings were able to reach Bartalsky for a run in the sixth when Andi Walker (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) led off with a double to left, was sacrificed to third by Missy Fobert (Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) and scored on a Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) single up the middle.

Kelli Humbert relieved Gill and shut the Red Dragons out in the fifth and sixth, but the Viking offense could do no more damage against Bartalsky, who went 6 2/3 innings in relief to pick up the win.

Gill took the loss, allowing six hits and four walks in four innings of work. Rosin, Walker and Fobert each had two hits to pace the Viking offense along with Nelson and Snoreck.

The two teams were scheduled for a second game as well Saturday and the Vikings were to play two more on Sunday against Hiram (9:30 a.m.) and Alma (1:30 p.m.). Augustana has another six games scheduled on its Florida trip which runs thru March 4.
