2010 Season - Vikings win 3-2 over '09 World Series team

Augustana made the most of its limited scoring chances and a trio of pitchers came up big in a 3-2 victory over Farmingdale State on Saturday, February 27 at Disney Hess Park in Orlando, Florida. The win was the third of the season against no defeats for head coach Greg Wallace’s crew and it came against a Farmingdale team that was an NCAA Division III College World Series participant in 2009.

Sophomore Mike Trotta (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) pitched six strong innings as the starter and was credited with the victory. Senior Kevin Kulig (Benet Academy, Lemont, Ill.) worked two innings and sophomore Joe Ufheil (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) worked a perfect ninth to notch his second save of the season. Trotta struck out six and walked just one and allowed just one unearned run during his time on the mound. Kulig struck out a pair and gave up one run while Ufheil only faced the minimum of three batters in the ninth.

The Vikings stranded eight base runners and Farmingdale starter Steve King totaled 13 strikeouts in going the distance in the loss. Augustana only collected five hits but were able to string together enough offense in the top of the fourth inning to push three runs across.

Junior Mike Lamb (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) opened the fourth with a walk and went to third on a double by junior Dave Hoffman (Cary-Grove HS, Fox River Grove, Ill.). A sacrifice fly off the bat of junior catcher T.J. O’Donnell (New Trier HS, Northbrook, Ill.) allowed Lamb to score the first run of the game. Freshman Nick Kujawa (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) followed with a double that brought Hoffman home with the second run. Kujawa then went to third and home of back to back wild pitches by King, two of the four that he would uncork in the fourth. That made it 3-0.
Farmingdale picked up one unearned run in the bottom of the fifth off Trotta and pushed across a single run in the eighth off Kulig.

Kujawa had two hits, scored a run and drove one in and was the offensive standout in the game.

Augustana will face Widener on Tuesday, March 1.
