2009-2010 Season - Augustana falls 61-44 to Millikin
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana women’s basketball team dropped a 61-44 decision to Millikin on Saturday, February 13 in Rock Island, Illinois. The Vikings fall to 6-17 overall and 1-11 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin with a pair of home games left to play this season.
The two squads traded the lead back and forth in the early going with Augustana moving in front 11-10 on a three point field goal by senior Kristen Fox (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) six minutes into the contest. Millikin reclaimed the lead with a three point basket of its own, but junior Alyssa Neitzel (Providence Catholic HS, Shorewood, Ill.) knocked down a jumper to tie the game at 13-13 with 11:38 remaining in the first half.
Millikin made the first significant run of the night, tallying 11 straight points to grab a 24-13 advantage. Fox connected on a jumper to stop the Big Blue scoring spree and close the gap to single digits at the 4:13 mark. Fox closed out a superb first half of play with a three point shot to trim the deficit to 26-18. Millikin scored five of the last seven points and held a 31-19 lead at intermission.
Freshman Kristin Warnken (Centaurus HS, Erie, Colo.) nailed a three point field goal at the 18:11 mark as Augustana closed within 33-22, but Millikin used a 10-4 run to push its lead to 17. The visitors continued to control the action through the first part of the second half, leading 46-30 at the 12:50 mark.
Sophomore Abbi Staples (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) scored a bucket at the 11:26 mark to start a Viking rally. Junior Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) also hit a jumper to cut the Millikin lead to 46-34. The visitors hit a three point shot to jump back in front by 15, but Augustana ran off the next seven points to edge within 49-41 at the 6:32 mark. Sophomore Lani Kasten (German Valley HS, Forreston, Ill.) scored on a three point play and Kernich added four straight points to complete the stretch.
Millikin finally put the game away with its third big run of the game. The Big Blue outscored the Vikings 12-3 to finish the contest and earn the 17 point road victory.
Fox led the Blue & Gold with 12 points, including 10 in the first half. Warnken scored nine points, Kernich had eight, and Neitzel contributed seven points off the bench.
Elise Wildman led Millikin with 18 points. Crystal Zeigler (14 points) and Cecily Aldridge (10 points) were also in double figures.
