2009-10 Season - Pelton leads Vikings to win on senior night

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Matt Pelton (Bloomington, Ill. Central Catholic HS, Houston, Texas) scored 13 of his game-high 16 points in the first half to lead Augustana to a 55-46 win over Millikin at Carver Center Saturday night. The lone senior on the Viking roster hit six of eight from the field including four of five from three-point range on “Senior Night.” The win moves the Vikings to 15-8 overall and 8-4 in the CCIW. Millikin falls to 7-16 overall and 2-10 in league play.

The Augustana backcourt of Pelton and Brian DeSimone (Buffalo Grove HS, Wheeling, Ill.) scored the team’s first eight points to stake the Vikings to an 8-4 lead early, but the Big Blue responded with a 7-0 run, aided by four Augustana turnovers, to go up 11-8. A Colby Long basket gave Millikin its biggest lead of the night, 13-9 at the 11:37 mark of the first half. Pelton and DeSimone then each had buckets in a 9-0 Viking run that put Augustana back in front 18-13 and Millikin would never lead again.

The Big Blue were able to forge ties at 20-20 and 22-22 before Pelton hit a three with just over a minute left and an 18-foot jumper at the halftime buzzer to put the Vikings up 27-22 at intermission. DeSimone scored seven in the first half as the Viking starting backcourt accounted for 20 of the team’s 27 points.

Augustana limited the Big Blue to just five field goals in their first 22 attempts of the second half and built the lead to as much as 18, 51-33, on a George Dexter (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) bucket with 2:34 remaining. Applying some effective full court pressure down the stretch, the Big Blue were able to cut the final margin to nine, although the outcome was never in doubt.

DeSimone joined Pelton in double figures with 10 points and added a game-high four assists as well. Kyle Nelson (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.), the Vikings’ leading scorer, was held to nine points, but contributed a game-high eight rebounds to help Augustana to a 35-28 edge on the glass. The Vikings shot .467 from the field (21 of 45) and held Millikin to just .380 (19 of 50).

Joscar Demby led the Big Blue with 13 points and Devin Demby collected eight rebounds.

The Viking win sets up a showdown with Illinois Wesleyan at Carver Center at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 17. Augustana and Wheaton are currently tied for third place in the CCIW at 8-4, one game behind the Titans (9-3) and two behind league-leading Carthage (10-2).
