2009-2010 Season - 11 event winners pave way at Wartburg

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois – Fresh off the news that they are ranked second in the initial NCAA Division III indoor power rankings of the 2010 season, the Augustana Vikings showed why at the Lutheran Triangular with an impressive victory. Held at Wartburg in Waverly, Iowa on Friday, January 29 and Saturday, January 30, Augustana won a total of 11 events and cruised to a win over Wartburg and Grand View. The Vikings scored 144 points while Wartburg had 124 and Grand View 96.

It was a fitting welcome back for veteran head coach Paul Olsen, who had missed the first three weeks of the season because he was teaching at Augustana’s winter term in Holden Village. Long time Viking women’s track & field coach Ron Standley served as the interim head coach in Olsen’s absence and the team clearly had not missed a beat.

On Friday and Saturday, it was once again a tremendous display of depth and balance as Augustana placed in every event except one.

Junior Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.) got things started on Friday, January 29 when he won the pentathlon with 3,157 points. Stake had the top performance in two of the five events inside the multi-event. He had the best long jump with a leap of 20’ 10 ¾” and the top high jump with a clearance of 6’ 3 ¼”. Senior David Zeko (Somonauk HS, Sheridan, Ill.) was fifth in pentathlon with 2,760 points.

The Vikings cleaned up in the middle and long distances, winning the 400, 600, 800, mile and 3000. Freshman Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) took the 400 in :51.01 and senior Nick Borchert (Ankeny HS, Ankeny, Iowa.) won the 600 in 1:24.41. In the field events the Vikings won twice. Junior Eric Chalus (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) took first in the pole vault with a clearance of 15’ 4 ¼” and qualified for the NCAA Division III national meet in the process.  It was the second time this year that Chalus has gone over the national qualifying standard. Sophomore Andrew Nice (Christian Life HS, Caledonia, Ill.) was second at 13’ 7 ¼” with freshman Edmund Hamilton (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) taking third at 13’ 1 ½” and freshman Ethan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) grabbing fourth at 12’ 7 ½”.
