2009-2010 Season - Alex Stake claims pentathlon at Wartburg
WAVERLY, Iowa - Junior Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.) helped Augustana get off to a good start in the Lutheran Triangular on Friday, January 29 in Waverly, Iowa. The Lutheran Triangular pits Augustana against host Wartburg and Grand View.
The rest of the meet will be Saturday, January 30 but the pentathlon was held on Friday night. Stake scored 3,157 points to win by over 150 points. Pete Westerkamp of Grand View was second with 2,997 points while Karch Landers of Wartburg was third with 2,854. Senior David Zeko (Somonauk HS, Sheridan, Ill.) placed fifth for the Vikings with 2,760 points while sophomore Matt Deets (Polo HS, Polo, Ill.) finished sixth with 2,652 points.
Stake was impressive in his first pentathlon, which consists of five events, of the season. He started the day with a time of :08.51 in the 55 hurdles, which placed him third and garnered him 711 points. He won the long jump with a leap of 20' 10 3/4" to score 668 points. In the shot put he recorded a mark of 30' 7 1/2" for 445 points. He won the high jump with a clearance of 6' 3 1/4" for 723 points and closed out the meet with a time of 3:05.66 in the 1,000 for 610 points.
