2009-2010 Season - Vikings fall to Chicago in close one 22-16

A pair of pins proved to be the difference as Augustana lost a 22-16 decision to the University of Chicago on Wednesday, January 20 in the Carver Center. Just 11 days earlier the Vikings fell to the Maroons by a score of 25-13 but the match was much closer this time around.

Augustana led 16-12 after a 4-2 victory by junior Matt Nykaza (Brother Rice HS, Oak Lawn, Ill.) over Wes Rosamilia at 184 pounds but a major decision for Chicago by Troy Carlson at 197 and a pin by Ryan Hatten at 285 proved to be the difference in the match.

Senior George Gogonas (Bowie HS, Austin, Texas) got things started in the right direction for Augustana by beating Jimmy Schoettle by a score of 8-3 at 125. Chicago’s Francisco Acosta scored a pin at 133 but the Vikings got a win from Alberto Quiros (Morton HS, Berwyn, Ill.) at 141. Quiros beat Joey Ruetteger 13-5 to give Augustana a 7-6 lead.

After a loss at 149 where Alec Rizzo (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) dropped a close 3-2 decision to Matt Hart, the Vikings got a 1-0 victory from Zac Holland (West Des Moines Dowling HS, Pleasant Hill, Iowa) at 149. Holland beat James Layton to move his record to 14-13 on the year.

Augustana also got victories at 174 and 184. Freshman Alex Vavra (Gull Lake HS, Dowling, Mich.) beat David Kneisel 5-2 to move to 19-14 this year while Nykaza beat Rosamilia and went to 9-7.

Each team won five weight classes but it was the pins at 133 and 285 that proved to be the deciding factor in this contest.
