2009-2010 Season - Vikings qualify three in win at Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Patrick Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) leapt 46’ 4¾” in the triple jump to set a new indoor school record and he, along with teammates Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) and Eric Chalus (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.), surpassed national qualifying marks in leading the Vikings to a win at Dubuque’s Sol Butler Classic Saturday. Augustana compiled 243 points to easily outdistance the rest of the nine-team field. Wisconsin-Platteville was second with 130 points.

Zeunik, Benning and Chalus were three of six Viking individuals to win events and Augustana was a winner in all three relay events as well.

Benning qualified for the Division III national meet at Greencastle, Indiana with a heave of 55’ 6¼” in the weight throw, edging out teammates Darin Decker (Moline HS, Moline, Ill) and Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) who finished second and third with throws of 54’ 8” and 53’ 9¼”, respectively. Decker’s toss fell just an inch short of the qualifying standard. Adam Myers (Dixon HS, Dixon, Ill.) threw 45’ 1¾” to take eighth.

Chalus qualified in the pole vault, clearing 15’ 3”. Alex Mikos (Fenton HS, Wood Dale, Ill.) and Colton VanKirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) each went 13’ 3½” and took fourth and fifth, respectively.

Other individual winners for Augustana included Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) in the 400 with a time of :51.67. Matt Somers (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) led a Viking sweep at 600 meters, running a 1:24.05 to finish just ahead of Jason Langslet (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) (1:24.79) and Greg Weigand (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) (1:24.81). Augustana just missed another sweep at 1000 meters. Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Elburn, Ill.) ran a winning 2:36.46 to nip Dan Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) by four one-hundredths of a second. Brian Hart (University City HS, St. Louis, Mo.) ran a 2:39.77 to take fourth.

The Vikings also won the distance medley with the team of Bailey, Steven Rogers (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.), Jarrett Kessel (Amboy HS, Sublette, Ill.) and Bowman running a 10:46.66 to beat teammates Hart, Daniel Doubet (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.), Dennis O’Flaherty (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) and Chris Zook (Normal Community HS, Normal, Ill.) who finished in 10:54.58.

Jacob O’Rourke (Assumption HS, Bettendorf, Iowa), Nick Borchert (Ankeny HS, Ankeny, Iowa), Nick Jones (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Chicago Heights, Ill.) and Brett Becker (Cuba City HS, Cuba City, Wis.) captured the 4x200 relay in a time of 1:34.75 while the team of Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.), Marty King (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.), Somers and Weigand accounted for Augustana’s other relay win, taking the 4x400 in a time of 3:27.03.

Chad Collins (Thornridge HS, Dolton, Ill.) finished second behind Zeunik in the triple jump, leaping 44’ 4¼” while teammate Matt Dobronics (Lincoln-Way East HS, Mokena, Ill.) was eighth with a 34’ 9¾” effort.

Davis ran a :08.00 in the 55-meter hurdles to take second place while King finished fifth in :08.21 and Patrick Callan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) was sixth with a time of :08.22. Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) also captured a second-place finish with a :22.89 in the 200 and Decker took second in the shot with a toss of 46’ 5½”. Christensen put the shot 46’ 0”—good for fourth.

Zeunik led a trio of Vikings in the long jump, taking third place with a leap of 21’ 8¾” while Alex Stake (Williamsville HS, Sherman, Ill.) went 20’ 10” for fifth and Jimmy Zars (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) took eighth with a mark of 20’ ½”. Zars also took eighth in the high jump, clearing 5’ 10”.

Max Petersen’s (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) :06.66 in the 55 earned him a  fourth place finish.

Jeff Miller (Dundee Crown HS, Algonquin, Ill.), Jake Adams (Stagg HS, Palos Heights, Ill.) and Eric Erspamer (Bartlett HS, Bartlett, Ill.) finished sixth, seventh and eighth in the mile with times of 4:55.42, 4:56.72 and 4:58.39, respectively.

Zook ran a 9:04.66 in the 3000 to take eighth place.

The Vikings will be in action next Saturday at Monmouth College’s Midwest Invitational at 11:00 a.m.
