2009-10 Season - Augustana uses 17-0 start to beat North Park

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana jumped out to a 17-0 lead and coasted to a 77-63 win over North Park to open the CCIW season Wednesday night at Carver Center. The home-standing Vikings benefitted from their most balanced offensive effort of the season, with nine players scoring between five and 14 points.

Augustana led 22-3 with 12-and-a-half minutes left in the first half before a barrage of five North Park three-pointers cut the lead to 24-19 at the nine minute mark. Augustana regained the momentum, however and took a 10-point lead into intermission behind 10 first-half points each from Brian DeSimone (Buffalo Grove HS, Wheeling, Ill.) and Kyle Nelson (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.).

In the second half, the Vikings got everyone involved with seven players scoring between four and six points in the second 20 minutes. Augustana shot .548 in half number two and was able to pull away late, establishing a 17-point lead before Nick Hoekstra’s three-pointer at the final buzzer cut the final margin to 14.

DeSimone finished the night with career-highs of 14 points and seven assists and tied for the team scoring lead with Nelson, who also snared seven rebounds. Augustana also got great contributions from Terrence Green (King HS, Chicago, Ill.) with eight points and five rebounds, George Dexter (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) with eight points and four boards, Kameron Norton (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) with six points and seven rebounds and Eric Safranski (Putnam County HS, Mark, Ill.) with seven points.

Augustana won the battle of the boards by a 40-29 count and turned it over just nine times to 15 for North Park. The home team shot .500 from the field and .412 from behind the arc. North Park connected on .440 from the floor and hit 10 of 26 three-pointers for a .385 mark.

Nick Williams, with 21 points, and Davone Robinson with 15, led North Park. Williams also had a game-high nine rebounds.

With the win, Augustana improves to 8-4 on the season and is off to a 1-0 start in league play. North Park drops to 6-6 overall and 0-1 in the CCIW. Augustana hits the road for Elmhurst, Illinois on Saturday and a 7:30 p.m. matchup with the Bluejays.
