2009-2010 Season - Viking women finish first at Augie Invite

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Senior Ramsey Vens (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) continued her superb senior season by winning individual titles in the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke to lead the Augustana women’s swimming team to a team championship in the 10 team Augustana Invitational on December 4 and 5 at the Carver Center Pool in Rock Island, Illinois.  Vens also anchored the winning team in the 800 freestyle relay, combining with freshman Molly Clennon (Benet Academy, Naperville, Ill.), senior Sara Hlavin (St. Viator HS, Elk Grove Village, Ill.), and junior Emily Cox (Pioneer HS, Ann Arbor, Mich.) for the victory.

Augustana led the field with 513.50 points, easily outdistancing Loras (406) for the team crown.  Knox (283) and Beloit (273) took third and fourth, while Hannibal-LaGrange (196) edged Iowa Central Community College (195) for fifth.  Coe (145), Robert Morris (133), Principia (111.50), and Eureka (5) rounded out the field.

Vens won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.55 and hit the finish line in the 200 backstroke with a clocking of 2:20.34.  The winning 800 freestyle relay team had a time of 8:33.72.  She continued her relay success by participating on three other relay squads that all took second place.  Vens combined with freshmen Emily Timmons (West Aurora HS, North Aurora, Ill.), Emma Regnier (Grayslake North HS, Lake Villa, Ill.), and Clennon for a time of 4:25.93 in the 400 medley relay.  Vens, Clennon, Hlavin, and freshman Alexandra Piper (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) finished the 200 freestyle relay in 1:48.31.  Vens, Piper, sophomore Alissa Giedd (Freeport HS, Cedarville, Ill.), and Clennon hit the finish in 3:56.70 in the 400 freestyle relay.  Vens was also fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:24.52) and sixth in the 50 freestyle (:27.06).

Regnier and sophomore Tanya Walter (Prospect HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) picked up the other first place showings for the Vikings.  Regnier won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:30.02 and Walter topped the competition in the one meter diving event with a score of 179.40.  Regnier added a runner-up performance in the 100 butterfly (1:07.03) and sixth place finishes in the 200 individual medley (2:26.65) and the 400 individual medley (5:18.36).  Walter was also third in the three meter diving event with a score of 145.80 points.

Hlavin came through with a strong weekend and was second in the 400 individual medley with a time of 5:05.73.  She also placed third in the 200 backstroke (2:24.16), fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:25.22), and sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:10.38).

Cox turned in a trio of fourth place finishes in the 200 (2:09.50), 500 (5:51.18), and 1650 freestyle (20:30.54) events at the meet.  Clennon grabbed the fifth spot in the 200 (2:10.37) and 500 freestyle (5:58.16) races. 

Timmons finished third in the 400 individual medley with a time of 5:10.04 and fourth in the 200 breaststroke with a clocking of 2:46.67.  She also took sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.20).  Regnier scored sixth place points in the 200 individual medley (2:26.65) and the 100 butterfly (1:07.03).
