2009 Season - 2009 MEN'S SOCCER REVIEW

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana men’s soccer team finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 6-10-3.  The Vikings also put together an impressive run in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin, notching a 3-2-2 mark and earning the No. 4 seed in the CCIW Tournament after being picked eighth in the pre-season coaches’ poll.

The Vikings opened the year with a 2-1 loss at Chicago, but rebounded with a 3-1 win over Lake Forest and a 1-0 double overtime thriller over Greenville in the team’s first home contest.  Successive one goal losses to Grinnell (1-0) and Hamline (2-1) left the Blue & Gold at 2-3 as the team entered CCIW action.

Facing Carthage in the first league match of the season, Augustana came away with a 2-1 victory in front of the home fans.  Augustana would fall 4-3 at eventual conference champion Elmhurst in its next CCIW match-up, but again came back with a 1-0 upset over No. 17 Wheaton.  It was the first ever win for the Vikings at Wheaton, ending a streak of 16 consecutive road losses to the Thunder.

Augustana continued to play well after the Wheaton win, defeating North Park 2-0 in its next game to improve to 3-1 in the CCIW.  Down the stretch, Augustana fell 2-1 to North Central and tied both Illinois Wesleyan and Millikin, securing the final entry into the CCIW post season tournament.  Facing top-seeded Elmhurst, the Vikings dropped a 2-0 decision to the Bluejays to end the season.

Seniors Mike Dolan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) and Scott Wallner (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) were both named to the CCIW All-Conference team as first team selections.  Dolan started all 19 games and played every minute in goal for the Vikings, notching six wins and making 89 saves, while only allowing 28 goals.  He compiled four shutouts, including three in a row against Wheaton, North Park, and Beloit.  Wallner earned first team status for the second straight season, finishing with three goals and two assists for a total of eight points.  He led the team with 59 shots on goal and played in 17 games as a starter.  Wallner also led the Vikings with a trio of game winning goals during the season.

Seniors John Linden (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) and Eric Love (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) each grabbed a spot on the CCIW All-Conference team as a member of the second unit.  Linden led the Blue & Gold with 13 points on the year, tallying five goals and three assists.  His five goals were tops on the club and his three assists were tied for best on the team.  Love turned in a superb season on the defensive end of the field, helping limit the opposition to only 28 goals in 19 contests.  He started all 19 games and scored one goal.

Senior Andrew Stanley (Harlem HS, Roscoe, Ill.) led a pack of players that also contributed heavily to Augustana’s success.  Stanley was limited to 11 games of action, but finished second on the squad with four goals and eight points on the season.  He took 16 shots and made 10 starts.  Sophomore Sean Fidlow (Carmel Catholic HS, Gurnee, Ill.) started all 15 games that he played and was tied with Linden for the team lead with three assists.  He added a pair of goals to finish the year with seven points.  Seniors Dave Shrigley (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) and Alex Rathe (Lake Zurich HS, Deer Park, Ill.) were the other two players with multiple goals for the Vikings.  Each player scored twice with Shrigley also contributing an assist.  Rathe started all 19 contests while Shrigley made 14 starts in 19 games of action.

The Vikings received help from numerous players throughout the season.  Senior Jonathan Woo (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) and freshmen Jason Beckus (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Nick Wolfe (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) scored the other three goals for Augustana.  Wolfe’s goal came in the historic win over Wheaton.  Kevin Wyrostek added a pair of assists, also finishing the year with two points.  Junior Alex Bennett (Lincoln Way East HS, Mokena, Ill.) and freshman Victor Mensink (Lyceum Sancta Maria, Amsterdam, The Netherlands) both earned an assist.  Junior Sean O’Malley (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) made 19 starts while sophomore Cory DeGrave (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) was close behind with 18 starts.
