2009 Season - Vikings' odyssey ends with loss to Calvin

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The finest season in the history of Augustana women’s soccer came to an end Friday night at Ericson Field as the fifth-ranked Vikings dropped a 2-1 decision to Calvin in NCAA sectional semifinal action. Augustana finishes the year 20-2-1. Calvin advances to tomorrow’s sectional final with a 16-4-1 record. The Knights will play the winner of Friday’s second semifinal between Washington University and Wheaton.

Augustana’s Caitlin Winkelman (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) got the Vikings off on the right foot with her ninth goal of the season, a 20-yard blast past Calvin goalkeeper Kayla Sulzer 27:33 into the match. The Vikings had controlled play up until that point, but as the half went along, the Knights gradually began to assert themselves. At the 34:56 mark, Calvin’s Carly Prins headed in a long pass from Lauren Heyboer to even the score at 1-1.

Momentum clearly had swung the Knights’ way late in the first half and it carried over to the second period as well. They took the lead at the 63:54 mark when Elaine Schnabel scored off a Mindy Capisciolto corner kick. Calvin continued its aggressive play the rest of the way, allowing Augustana few opportunities down the stretch.

The Vikings got off just one shot in the second period and were outshot for the game by a 13-5 margin. Six of the Knights’ 13 shots were on goal, while Augustana had just three shots on goal all night. Calvin also held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

Augustana’s Kayla Radloff (West Chicago HS, West Chicago, Ill.), who finishes the season with a school-record 19 wins in goal, made four saves on the evening while her Calvin counterpart, Sulzer, was credited with two.
