2009 Season - Augustana advances to sweet sixteen

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Former high school teammates Lauren Polock (Wheaton North HS, Wheaton, Ill.) and Katie Oakes (Wheaton North HS, Wheaton, Ill.) teamed up for the match’s only goal as Augustana defeated Wisconsin-Stevens Point 1-0 Sunday night to advance to the sweet sixteen of the NCAA Division III soccer tournament. The win improves the 5th-ranked Vikings to 20-1-1 on the year, extending their school record for wins in a season. UW-Stevens Point, who entered the tournament ranked 22nd in the nation, ends its season at 16-4-1.

Oakes took a feed from Polock and beat Pointer keeper Liz Hunter 28:45 into the match for the only goal of the night. The goal was Oakes 10th of the season and Polock’s assist was her 10th, extending her own single season record. Those two now rank first and second on Augustana’s career assist list as well with Oakes’ total of 18 trailing only Polock’s school-record 33.

The Viking defense, spearheaded by sophomores Megan Mummert (Crawfordsville HS, Crawfordsville, Ind.), Kelly Johnson (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Homewood, Ill.) and Mary Pat Holtrop (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) as well senior Anna Carey (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Warrenville, Ill.), did a tremendous job of containing the explosive Pointer trio of Kirsti Nickels, Jackie Spees and Vicki Bieschke. The three had combined for 35 goals and 21 assists on the year coming in, but managed just one shot on goal the entire night.

Viking goalkeeper Kayla Radloff (West Chicago HS, Wes Chicago, Ill.) improved to 19-1-1 with her 12th shutout of the season and faced just two shots on goal behind the stifling Augustana defense—none in the second half.

Coach Scott Mejia’s Vikings, now deeper in the tournament than they’ve ever advanced, move on to the round of sixteen where they will face Calvin, who advanced with a 1-0 win over Wittenberg. That game will be played Friday, November 20, at a time and site to be determined.
