2009 Season - Augustana claims CCIW tournament title

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana women’s soccer team shut out Illinois Wesleyan 1-0 for the second time in two weeks Saturday at Ericson Field. The win, in the CCIW conference tournament championship game, earns the Vikings the CCIW’s automatic bid to the 63-team NCAA Division III tournament field.

Augustana, the conference regular season champion as well with a 7-0 record, improves to 18-1-1 overall on the season, extending the school record for wins which this year's team had already set. Illinois Wesleyan falls to 15-3-3 and will be looking for an at-large spot in the tournament when the pairings are announced on Monday.

The Vikings got the only goal they would need 13:44 into the match when Caitlin Winkelman (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) headed in a rebound of her own previous shot which had been saved by the Titans’ goalkeeper Alli Novak. The goal was Winkelman’s eighth of the season.

Augustana controlled play in the early part of the first half, but the tide slowly turned with IWU getting more opportunities later in the half. The best of those came with 12:15 remaining when the Vikings were called for a foul in the box resulting in a penalty kick for IWU’s Molly O’Brien. However, Augustana keeper Kayla Radloff (West Chicago HS, West Chicago, Ill.) came up with the huge save, snaring O’Brien’s kick to keep the Vikings in front.

Each team got off five shots in the first half. The Titans matched that total in the second half, while Augustana, in a more defensive mode to protect the lead, got off just two. Radloff had six saves with three coming in each half. Novak recorded three saves for the Titans.

Augustana now waits for Monday’s pairings to see if they will be chosen to host in the first round of the tournament. This will be the third NCAA appearance in five years for Coach Scott Mejia’s Vikings.
