ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Seniors Lauren Polock (Wheaton North HS, Wheaton, Ill.) and Katie Oakes (Wheaton North HS, Wheaton, Ill.) combined for three goals as Augustana defeated Elmhurst 4-1 Saturday at Ericson Field. The win on senior day wrapped up a perfect 7-0 CCIW record and earned the school its first-ever conference championship in women’s soccer.

With the win, the Vikings improve to 16-1-1 overall. That win total represents a new school record, surpassing the 15 wins achieved in 2005, 2006 and 2008. Elmhurst falls to 10-7 overall and 3-4 in CCIW play.

Elmhurst got on the board first—just four and a half minutes in—when Sarah Harvey scored her third goal of the season on an assist from Cassie Giese. Augustana freshman Taylor Moesle (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) answered at the 17:36 mark of the first half on an assist from Polock. The goal was Moesle’s seventh of the year, while Polock’s assist was her team-leading eighth of the season.

The game was scoreless through the remainder of the half and the teams went to the break tied 1-1. During halftime Augustana honored this year’s six seniors. In addition to Polock and Oakes, Amanda Bucci (Glenbard North HS, Carol Stream, Ill.), Anna Carey (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Warrenville, Ill.), Darla Smith (Davenport North HS, Davenport, Iowa) and Deanna Recchia (Glenbard North HS, Bloomingdale, Illinos) were recognized for their contributions to Coach Scott Mejia’s program which has posted a 59-12-5 record during their four years.

The defensive struggle continued well into the second half until a Polock blast from the left side found the upper right hand corner of the net to put Augustana up 2-1 with just less than 11 minutes remaining. The goal, Polock’s third of the season, came on a nice cross-field feed from Caitlin Winkelman (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.).

Not letting up at all, the Vikings finished with a flourish, getting a pair of goals by Oakes. The first, at the 85-minute mark, came on an assist from freshman Kirsten Boesen (Normal Community West HS, Gibson City, Ill.) and the second, Oakes’ seventh of the season, came on a penalty kick two minutes later.

With the CCIW title wrapped up, the Vikings can now look ahead to the conference tournament. Augustana will host Millikin at Ericson Field at 7:00 Wednesday, November 4 in a semifinal matchup.
