2009 Season - Penalty kick decides high scoring match

A penalty kick ended up being the deciding factor as Elmhurst defeated Augustana 4-3 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin men’s soccer action on Saturday, September 26. A wild affair that saw all the scoring done in a 54 minute time frame left the Vikings with a 3-5-0 overall record and a 1-1-0 mark in league play. Augustana tied the match three times but never led as the Bluejays improved to 6-2-1 and 1-0 in the CCIW.

Randy Warren scored the deciding goal when he converted on a penalty kick at 80:10 to give Elmhurst a 4-3 lead that it did not relinquish. The Vikings were able to answer the Bluejays three times in the game but could not score in the game’s final 10 minutes to send things into overtime.

The two teams played scoreless soccer for nearly 27 minutes before Matt Sterner broke the draught with his third goal of the season at 26:50 off an assist by Luke Froehlich. Eric Love (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) answered for the Vikings with an unassisted goal from 25 yards out at 30:45 to notch the first of what would eventually be three ties in the match.

There was no scoring for the rest of the half and the game was knotted 1-1 at intermission. Ken Miller put Elmhurst ahead 2-1 at 59:11 as Froehlich was credited with his second assist of the game. John Linden (Fremd HS, Libertyville, Ill.) scored on a penalty kick at 75:20 to tie things at 2-2.

That started a wild five minute stretch that would see four goals scored. Miller gave the Bluejays a 3-2 lead with his second goal of the match, and fifth of the year, at 77:57. He was assisted by Brian McMahon and Keith Thomas. Dave Shrigley (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) scored less than a minute later (78:44) with Linden getting an assist to make it 3-3. It took less than two minutes (80:10) for Warren to cash in on the penalty kick to give Elmhurst its fourth, and final, lead of the contest.

Elmhurst held a 19-10 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Augustana goalkeeper Mike Dolan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) recorded five saves in his 90 minutes of work.

The Vikings will play Coe at home on Tuesday, September 29 at 7:30 p.m. in a non-conference match.
