2009 Season - Jungnickel nails 16 kills in loss

Despite a team high 16 kills from Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.), Augustana dropped a 3-1 decision to Mt. Mercy on Tuesday, September 1 in the Carver Center. It was the season opener for second year head coach Janelle Hester while the Mustangs were playing in their fifth match of the 2009 campaign. The Vikings won the first game fairly easily by a score of 25-14 but dropped a tough 25-23 decision in game two. Mt. Mercy took game three 25-20 and won the clinching game four by a count of 25-19.

Jungnickel was outstanding in defeat for the Vikings as she tallied 16 kills on 31 attempts with just four hitting errors. She also had 22 digs, two service aces, one solo block and one assisted block. Also ending up in double digits in kills was freshman Casey Komel (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.). Komel had 11 in just 15 attempts with one solo block and three assisted blocks. Sophomore Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.) had nine kills with one service ace, one solo block and one assisted block.

Junior Allison Bailey (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) picked up 25 assists from her setting position in her first ever varsity start. Freshman Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) had seven assists. Freshman Shannon Slick (Rockton Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) led the Vikings in digs with 22.
