2009 Season - Vikings fall 2-1 at Chicago in opener
CHICAGO, Ill. – The Augustana men’s soccer team opened the 2009 campaign on the road at Chicago and fell 2-1 to the Maroons on Tuesday, September 1 in Chicago, Illinois. The Vikings are 0-1 to begin the season.
The game started well for the Blue & Gold as Chicago scored an own goal to put the Vikings in front 1-0 at 10:02 of the first half. The Maroons outshot Augustana 10-2, but the visitors maintained a one goal edge heading into intermission.
Augustana maintained its lead until the 65:32 mark of the second half when Edgar Friloux scored on an assist from Kenzo Manners to knot the contest at 1-1. Chicago quickly struck again at the 67:45 mark when Alex Clifford scored the game winner to put the home squad in front 2-1. Manners notched his second assist of the evening on the scoring play.
Senior Mike Dolan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) made nine saves for Augustana and played the entire contest in goal for the Vikings. Sophomore Marc Nethercote (Grayslake HS, Grayslake, Ill.) led the Blue & Gold with two shots on goal, but Chicago finished the night with a 26-5 shot advantage.
