2009 Season - Ramos signs with Rio Grande Valley
Mark Ramos (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.), who put the finishing touches on a tremendous baseball career at Augustana this past spring, recently signed a professional baseball contract. Ramos, a four year starter at shortstop for Greg Wallace’s Vikings, has hooked up with the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings of the United League Baseball. He was signed as a pitcher.
The WhiteWings are located in Harlingen, Texas and play all their home games at 4,500 capacity Harlingen Field. The United League Baseball is an independent baseball league which operates throughout Texas. Teams in the league are located in cities not served by either major or minor league baseball and the ULB not affiliated with either. The league began its first season on May 16, 2006 with six teams. Other teams in the league are as follows: Amarillo Dillas, Coastal Bend Thunder, Edinburg Roadrunners, Laredo Broncos and the San Angelo Colts. The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings were founded in 1994.
Earlier this summer, Ramos played for the Beatrice Bruins, a semi-pro team in Beatrice, Nebraska. Ramos batted .280 with 26 hits in 93 at-bats with 12 runs scored, 12 runs-batted-in and three stolen bases. He also appeared in four games as a pitcher and was 1-0 with a 2.70 earned run average in 13 1/3 innings with five strikeouts.
Ramos was a two time all-conference performer for the Vikings and this past year he was a third team all-Central Regional selection by the American Baseball Coaches Association. He batted .378 with 56 hits in 148 at-bats in 2009. He scored 36 runs with seven doubles, five triples, four home runs and 41 runs-batted-in.
He holds the Augustana school record for career triples with 13 and his name is all over the Vikings top 10 list for career offensive categories. He is third in at-bats (593), fourth in runs scored (147), fourth in hits (212), sixth in runs-batted-in (114) and ninth in stolen bases (37). During his career he helped Augustana participate in the NCAA Division III tournament in 2007 and 2008.
