2009-2010 Season - Youth will be important in 2009

Young players will be expected to step up for Vikings in 2009-10 women’s golf season

Veteran Augustana head coach Ron Standley is certain about one thing heading into the 2009-10 women’s golf season. He knows that any success that the Vikings have in the upcoming season will be the result of some players stepping into roles that they haven’t had to fill in recent years.

“There is no question that we are going to have to have some kids step up,” said Standley, who is entering his 11th season at the Augustana helm. “We are going to have to replace two players who were four year regulars in Rachel Gahn and Heather Arizpe. They really did a great job in leading us but now it will time for others to show what they can do.”

Standley will have six letter winners to choose from among his eight player roster. Senior Liz Scarlata (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) and junior Jessica Berens (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) will lead the team as co-captains. Scarlata played in nine rounds last year and averaged 102.8 with a low round of 97. She recorded a best finish of 27th in the Augustana Spring Invitational. Berens saw action in 12 rounds and averaged 99.9 with a low score of 91. She placed 15th in the Augustana Triangular in the fall season.

The honor of being the low returning scorer goes to sophomore Brittany Carr (Lincoln-Way East HS, Frankfort, Ill.). Carr played in 14 rounds during her freshman season and she averaged 90.3 with a low score of 82. She was fifth in the Augustana Triangular in the fall and took 12th in the Augustana Invitational in the spring. She finished 16th in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship.

Senior Katy Mascheri (Hersey HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.) has plenty of experience as she played in 14 rounds in 2008-09. She averaged 101.4 with a low round of 90 and was 21st in the Mount Mercy Invitational.

Two other letter winners will be junior Courtney VandeWiele (Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) and sophomore Alexa Fontana (Freeport Aquin HS, Freeport, Ill.). VandeWiele averaged 104.1 in seven rounds with a 96 as her best round. She took 34th in the North Central Invitational in the fall. Fontana averaged 95.7 in six rounds and had a low score of 89. Fontana was 29th in the CCIW and 22nd in the Monmouth Invitational.

Standley will also rely heavily on two freshmen: Megan Vandersee (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) and Morgan Wilkinson (Westmont HS, Westmont, Ill.).

“This is a great opportunity for somebody to make a great contribution,” said Standley, who has guided his team to four straight winning seasons. “We like our two freshmen and I have all the confidence in the world in our returning players. This will be a great challenge and it will be fun to see how our team responds.”
