2009 Season - Gonzalez picked for Elite Coaching Camp

David Gonzalez, the throws coach for both the men and women’s track & field teams at Augustana, has been selected to participate in a unique coaching opportunity. Gonzalez, a 2003 graduate of Augustana, is one of just 10 coaches nationwide to nail down a spot at the Emerging Elite Men’s & Women’s Coaches Camps.

The Emerging Elite Camp will be held at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California. The camp will be held from July 18-23 and it is sponsored by United States Track & Field and the United States Olympic Committee.

Criteria for selection to the program were stringent. Coaches were selected based on their record of developing athletes in their respective event area (s) of expertise at the state and national levels, and their projected potential to develop future Olympic medalists. These camps are designed to enhance the expertise of current elite-level high school, club and college coaches with the goal of them joining the United States’ finest developers of national caliber talent in their respective events. The selection was done by the United States Track & Field Development Committee Event Coordinators.

Gonzalez had a tremendous career as an athlete at Augustana. He won three straight College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin indoor championships in the 35 pound weight toss. He also won the shot put at the outdoor CCIW meet in 2003. When he graduated he held school records in the hammer throw outdoors and the weight toss indoors. At one time he held the CCIW record for the indoor weight toss.

Upon graduation he turned to the coaching ranks and his success there has been prolific. He has coached CCIW champions such as Tom McIntire and Darin Decker on the men’s side and Marissa Banks and Paula Neiweem for the women. This past spring Phil Christensen, just a freshman, broke the Augustana school record in the discus and earned NCAA Division III All-American honors. Banks has been a multiple All-American performer under Gonzalez’ guidance.
