2008-09 Season - 2008-09 Women's Tennis Review

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana women’s tennis team finished the spring portion of its schedule with a 7-5 record and ends the year with a 14-13 overall record, the second straight winning season for the squad. The women were 7-8 in the fall with a 3-3 mark in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. The Vikings finished in fifth place at the CCIW Championships by compiling 22 points at the event. Augustana was edged out by Illinois Wesleyan, who took third with 27 points, and North Central, who placed fourth with 24 points.

The Vikings had wins over Monmouth, Wartburg, Knox, Millikin, Illinois Wesleyan, Elmhurst, and Loras in the fall. The women added victories over Lebanon Valley, Catholic, St. Ambrose, Simpson, Monmouth, Knox, and St. Francis during the spring season. Augustana’s first win of the spring over Lebanon Valley during the team’s trip to South Carolina proved to be a significant one. Lebanon Valley won its conference and qualified for the national tournament, but fell to the Vikings when Augustana rallied from a 4-2 singles deficit to sweep the three doubles matches and claim a 5-4 victory. The Blue & Gold avenged a 5-4 fall loss to St. Ambrose by knocking off the Queen Bees 6-3 in the spring. Augustana also defeated Simpson 9-0 after losing a pair of 5-4 matches against the Storm over the past two seasons.

Junior Jenna Richardson (Melrose Park Walther Lutheran HS, Bellwood, Ill.) compiled a 16-14 mark in singles and was also 21-10 in doubles. She played all but two of her singles matches in the No. 1 spot and won her final nine matches of the spring season. Richardson also earned CCIW All-Conference honors as a second team selection and has 52 career wins after three seasons with the Vikings. Her career singles record of 52-35 includes marks of 24-19 at No. 1, 14-8 at No. 2, 12-8 at No. 3, and 2-0 at No. 6.

Richardson paired with junior Tricia Crawford (Decorah HS, Decorah, Iowa) for a 9-3 doubles record in the spring. They played one match at No. 2 before moving into the No. 1 slot. In the fall, Richardson teamed with senior Alli Bernardi (Rockford Lutheran HS, Belvidere, Ill.) for a fourth place finish at number two doubles at the CCIW Championships. The tandem earned wins over Millikin and Illinois Wesleyan en route to taking fourth. Richardson compiled a 9-6 mark with Bernardi, finished 2-0 with freshman Brittany Reece (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.), went 1-1 with junior Rose Szczurek (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.).

Crawford filled the No. 2 singles position during the spring season after spending the fall studying in Costa Rica. She finished 5-7 overall including a 5-5 mark at No. 2. She was also 0-2 in limited action at No. 1. The junior finished the spring season by winning 12 of her final 16 matches in singles and doubles.

Sophomore Tricia Sapio (Barrington HS, Hoffman Estates, Ill.) led the squad with 17 singles victories. She was 16-12 at No. 4 and 1-2 at No. 3 to finish at 17-14 overall. Sapio was the fourth seed in the No. 4 singles flight at the CCIW Championships. She defeated Elmhurst’s Blair Hufford in the opening round, and then fell to Kayli Edwards of Wheaton in the semi-finals. The sophomore rebounded with a victory over Sarah Wilson of Illinois Wesleyan and then defeated Melissa Lewis of North Central in the third place match.

Sapio also teamed up with junior Emily Doemland (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) in doubles for the Vikings, where the duo compiled a 10-19 mark in doubles. After finishing 4-14 in the No. 1 slot in the fall, the duo finished 6-5 at No. 2 during the spring season.

Doemland tied Richardson for second on the team with 16 singles victories. She finished 13-14 at No. 3 and also was 1-0 at No. 2 singles and 2-0 at No. 4 singles to finish 16-14 overall. Doemland was fourth seed in the number three singles bracket at the CCIW Championships and responded with a third place finish of her own. She fell to Brittney Dunn of Wheaton in the semi-finals after receiving a first round bye, but came back with wins against Elmhurst’s Stephanie Ruff and Kristen Piotrowski of Illinois Wesleyan to claim third place.

Reece was 14-12 overall in singles play in her first college season, including a 9-10 mark at No. 5, a 5-1 mark at No. 6, and an 0-1 record at No. 4. She was also 11-11 for the Augustana in doubles, finishing 9-10 at No. 3 and 2-1 in the No. 2 position. Reece played primarily with sophomore Justine Stukas (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.), compiling an 8-9 record at No. 3 doubles and finishing fourth at the CCIW Championships.

Stukas was 12-12 overall in doubles, playing a few matches with different partners. She also finished 3-9 in singles action, mostly at No. 6. Szczurek was 4-6 in singles, with all but one match coming at No. 5. Sophomore Sheri Hendricks (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Warrenville, Ill.) returned from a knee injury this spring and finished 3-2 in singles at No. 6 and 3-1 at No. 3 doubles. Freshman Julie Wach (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) was 4-2 in doubles and 0-2 in singles at the varsity level. Freshman Alyssa Quitschau (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) finished 1-3 in singles on the varsity squad and was 2-1 with Wach at No. 3 doubles.

Augustana finishes the season with an overall record of 83-95 in singles and 46-44 in doubles. The team was 77-85 in singles in dual meets with a 14-22 record against CCIW opponents. The Vikings finished 43-38 in doubles in dual matches and were 9-9 in CCIW meets.
