2009 Season - Vikings drop two to Carthage in CCIW softball action

The Augustana Vikings dropped a pair of College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin softball games to Carthage on Wednesday, April 22 at Carver Field. The Lady Reds took game one by a score of 1-0 in a pitcher’s duel and then came from behind to score a 7-5 win in the nightcap.

Augustana is now 24-10 overall and 6-4 in the CCIW while Carthage improved to 22-8 and 7-5.

Kelsey Epping of Carthage and Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.) of Augustana hooked up in a pitcher’s duel in the first game of a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin double header. The result was a 1-0 victory for the Lady Reds.

Epping allowed just five hits while striking out six and walking two as she picked up the victory, her 13th of the season against just three defeats. Gill was hung with the loss but she pitched well, giving up six hits and just one run. She struck out five and did not walk a batter as she went to 10-6 for the season.

Carthage scored the only run it would need in the top of the first inning. With two outs Stephanie Noel singled and went to second on a single by Jacquelyn Tassone. Noel scored the game’s lone run on a single by Kari Peterson.

Augustana’s best chance to score came in the fourth when Stephanie Sarb (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) singled with one out. She was replaced by pinch runner Jamie Bauerlein (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.). Christine Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) singled Bauerlein to second. After a pop up for the second out, a passed ball advanced Bauerlein to third and Trojanowski to second. A fly ball to center ended the threat.

Stephanie Noel greeted Augustana reliever Erica Aten’s (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) first pitch in a fifth inning with a line drive home run and that proved to be the difference in a 7-5 Carthage victory in the nightcap of the double header.

The Vikings led 5-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth when the first two Carthage batters reached on walks issued by Augustana starter Sheldon Ritzheimer (Trenton Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.). A double off the bat of Heather Johnson tied the game at 5-5 and Aten came in for Ritzheimer. Noel then lined Aten’s first offering over the left field fence for a 7-5 lead, which proved to be the difference in the game.

Augustana took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) led off with a walk and Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) hit a home run. In the second the Vikings picked up a run when Rosin singled to left to drive in Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) to make it 3-0. Carthage picked up two runs in the bottom of the inning on a two run home run off the bat of Kari Peterson.

The Vikings went back in front by two runs in the top of the third Quaritsch walked and eventually came in on a single by Christine Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.). A home run off the bat of Carthage designated hitter Alyssa Schrader sliced the gap to 4-3.

In the top of the fifth Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) hit a solo home run to make it 5-3 before Carthage exploded for four runs in the decisive bottom of the frame.

Rosin collected three hits to lead the Augustana attack.

Allie Benthusen picked up the win for Carthage while Kelsey Epping secured the save. Ritzheimer got the loss for the Vikings and is now 10-3 on the year.
