2009-10 Season - 2008-09 MEN'S SWIMMING REVIEW

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Vikings placed sixth at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championship meet with 178 points.  Carthage ran away with the tem title, scoring 1,035 points to outdistance Wheaton (734).  Rose-Hulman (482), Illinois Wesleyan (460), Millikin (274), and North Central (157) completed the field.

Augustana put together a solid showing at the three day championship event, compiling top-six finishes in all five relay events.  Sophomore Drew Clinton (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Brookfield, Ill.), sophomore Joseph Waldorf (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.), junior Eric Zike (Ridgeview HS, Colfax, Ill.), and senior Dan Betz (DeKalb HS, DeKalb, Ill.) finished in sixth place in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:31.61.  Clinton, senior Jason Perine (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.), Zike, and Betz took fifth place in the 400 freestyle relay with a clocking of 3:25.62.  Freshman Denny Wind (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.), junior Jacob Glimco (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.), senior Kevin Hickey (Lincoln Way East HS, Mokena, Ill.), and sophomore Michael Reeves (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) grabbed the sixth slot in the 800 freestyle relay (8:25.75).  Zike, Perine, Betz, and Clinton completed the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.18 and finished fifth in the race.  Zike, freshman Michael Whittle (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.), Betz, and Clinton also combined for a sixth place showing in the 400 medley relay, hitting the finish in a time of 3:50.06.

Senior Rob Emerson (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) finished second in the three meter diving event (358.95) and second in the one meter diving competition (334.95).  Zike had a trio of top-16 finishes, placing 11th in the 100 backstroke (:57.17), 14th in the 200 backstroke (2:09.40), and 16th in the 100 butterfly (:57.64).  Betz was 15th in the 100 butterfly with a time of :55.73.

Augustana dominated the competition on the way to a team title at the Eureka Invitational on January 24.  The Vikings finished with 647 points, well ahead of runner-up Knox (162).  The Blue & Gold crowned six individual champions on the day.  Zike was a double winner, taking top honors in the 100 backstroke (101:00) and the 50 backstroke (:27.99).  Wind, Whittle, Clinton, and Betz also won individual events at the meet.  Wind earned first place in the 200 freestyle (2:04.99) and Whittle beat the competition in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.39).  Clinton raced to a win in the 50 butterfly (:25.54) and Betz sprinted past the other swimmers in the 100 individual medley (1:00.95).

The Vikings were 3-3 on the season in dual meets.  Augustana defeated Coe, Knox, and North Central with losses coming against Iowa Central CC, Monmouth, and Loras.  The men finished second out of seven teams at the Augustana Invitational, second out of four teams at the Panther Invitational, fourth out of seven teams at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational, fourth out of four teams at the Halloween Invitational, and fifth out of seven teams at the Grinnell Invitational.
