2008-09 Season - Augustana downs Monmouth 7-2

MOLINE, Ill. – The Augustana women’s tennis team was a 7-2 winner over Monmouth on Sunday, April 5 at the Quad City Tennis Club in Moline, Illinois. The Vikings defeated Monmouth 5-4 last fall in the first match of the season. With the victory, the Blue & Gold improve to 12-12 overall this season with three matches remaining on the spring schedule.

Freshman Brittany Reece (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and sophomore Sheri Hendricks (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Warrenville, Ill.) played together for the first time this season and won (8-1) at number three doubles against Maddie Ethington and Julie Battcher. Reece and Hendricks dropped the first game before rattling off eight straight to earn the win. Juniors Jenna Richardson (Melrose Park Walther Lutheran HS, Bellwood, Ill.) and Tricia Crawford (Decorah HS, Decorah, Iowa) also continued to play well together, knocking off Cassie Frantz and Brittany Donnelly (8-1) at number one doubles. Richardson and Crawford are 7-2 this spring in doubles matches. Monmouth got on the board when Amy Unzicker and Kim Wegner defeated Augustana’s junior Emily Doemland (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) and sophomore Tricia Sapio (Barrington HS, Hoffman Estates, Ill.) by an (8-4) score at second doubles.

Leading 2-1, Augustana put the match away with straight set wins at first, fifth, and sixth singles. Richardson beat Frantz (6-3, 6-2) at number one singles to record her 49th career singles victory. Reece won (6-0, 6-3) against Ethington at the fifth position and Hendricks was a (6-1, 6-3) winner over Rachel Bognar at number six singles. The other three singles matches all went to a third set super tie-breaker and the Vikings pulled out a couple more wins. Crawford (pictured above) rallied to defeat Unzicker (3-6, 6-4, (10-6)) at second singles. Sapio also rallied for a three set win after trailing 6-2, 5-2. She fought off multiple match points before winning (2-6, 7-6 (8), (10-6)). Sapio leads the Vikings with 15 singles wins this season. Doemland battled Wegner into a third set at number three singles before falling (3-6, 7-6 (4), (10-7)).
