2009 Season - Five home runs and no-hitter by Erica Aten lead to softball sweep of Knox

Fueled by five home runs, including two each from Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) and Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) Augustana swept Knox in non-conference softball action on Wednesday, April 1. The Vikings won game one 10-3 as Fobert hit a pair of home runs and Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) drilled one. In game two freshman Erica Aten (Moline HS, Coal Valley, Ill.) tossed a no-hitter as Augustana won 8-0 in a game shortened to just five innings. Quaritsch hit two home runs as the Vikings moved to 16-4 overall.

The Vikings took advantage of five Knox errors and defeated the Prairie Fire by a score of 10-3 in the first game of a non-conference double header. Augustana managed nine hits against Knox pitcher Cory Bieber but of the 10 runs the Vikings scored, only four were earned.

In the first inning Augustana put five runs on the board. Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) led off with a walk and then she stole second and third. She scored on a single by Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) and Quaritsch went to second on the play. She moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.). An error allowed Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) to reach base and she promptly stole second. Nelson moved to third on a single to left by Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.). Andi Walker’s (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) single resulted in both Gill and Nelson scoring. Walker scored the fifth run of the inning on a single by Missy Fobert (Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.).

Fobert would hit solo home runs in the fourth and sixth inning and Snoreck smacked a solo shot in the sixth as well.

Fobert had three hits and three RBI in the game while Nelson collected a pair of hits.

Sheldon Ritzheimer (Trenton Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) picked up the win, working a total of 6 1/3 innings with 10 strikeouts and just one walk. She moved her record to 7-1 on the season.

Erica Aten (Moline HS, Coal Valley, Ill.) tossed a five inning no-hitter, striking out seven and moving her record to 2-0. She walked one and hit a batter.

Carlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) drilled a pair of home runs in the victory. She hit a two run shot in the first with Jen Sloboda (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) on base and she came up in the second with Sloboda on base again and hit another one.

The Vikings scored five runs in the first on six hits and added two more in the second on the blast by Quaritsch. A single by Emilee Goad (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) in the fifth brought home Abbi Staples (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) with the eighth run of the game.

In all, Augustana collected 11 hits with each starter getting at least one.
