2008-09 Season - Jenna Richardson earns pair of victories to lead Augustana women's tennis team to 6-3 win over St. Ambrose

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana women’s tennis team scored a 6-3 victory over St. Ambrose on Sunday, March 22 at the Quad City Tennis Club in Moline, Illinois, avenging a 5-4 loss to the Queen Bees last fall.  The Vikings improve to 10-11 overall with the win and have six matches remaining on the spring schedule.

Juniors Jenna Richardson (Melrose Park Walther Lutheran HS, Bellwood, Ill.) and Tricia Crawford (Decorah HS, Decorah, Iowa) opened the match with an (8-3) victory over Amanda Gomez and Adrianne Foley at number one doubles.  Sophomores Sheri Hendricks (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Warrenville, Ill.) and Justine Stukas (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) also teamed together for an (8-5) win at third doubles, defeating Liz Finley and Emily Anderson to put the Blue & Gold in front 2-0.  It was the first match of the season for Hendricks who was recovering this fall from summer knee surgery.  Junior Emily Doemland (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) and sophomore Tricia Sapio (Barrington HS, Hoffman Estates, Ill.) dropped a close match (8-6) at number two doubles against Rachel Sarafin and Jenelle Bayer.

Leading 2-1 after doubles, Richardson (pictured above) scored her second victory of the day to put Augustana up 3-1.  She defeated Gomez (6-2, 2-6, (10-7)) to give the Vikings some key momentum early in the singles action.  Gomez had beaten Richardson in straight sets last fall.  Freshman Brittany Reece (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) pushed the Augustana advantage to 4-1 with a (6-1, 6-3) decision over Staci Kapius at sixth singles.  Crawford battled back from two match points down in the second set to force a third set super tie-breaker, but eventually fell (6-4, 6-7 (6), (10-6)) to Sarafin at second singles as St. Ambrose cut the deficit to 4-2.  Doemland came through with a (6-3, 6-2) win over Bayer at third singles to clinch the meet for Augustana.  Leading 4-3 in the first set, Doemland won eight of the final 10 games to earn the victory.  Sapio also won in straight sets to tally the sixth win for the Blue & Gold.  She defeated Foley (6-4, 6-2) at fourth singles.  Junior Rose Szczurek (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) battled back and forth with Anderson at number five singles in the final match of the day, but lost (5-7, 7-5, (11-9)) after fighting off a match point in the third set super tie-breaker.
