2009 Season - Vikings beat Neumann 7-6 to open softball campaign; Sarb and Nelson both club home runs

KISSIMMEE, Florida – Home runs by Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) and Stephanie Sarb (Lisle Township HS, Lisle, Ill.) and a four run fifth inning provided the key elements as Augustana opened the 2009 season with a 7-6 victory over Neumann College. The game was played on Saturday, February 28 at the Orange County Softball Complex in Kissimmee, Florida.

Nelson drilled a two run homer with two outs in the bottom of the first inning, scoring Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.), who led off the frame with a walk. That shot erased a 1-0 Neumann lead. Sarb led off the bottom of the second with a home run to give the Vikings a 3-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the fifth Augustana was clinging to a 3-2 lead when the Vikings erupted for four runs. With one out Rosin beat out an infield single. Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) forced Rosen at second for the second out. Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) also reached on a fielder’s choice but Neumann was unable to get Trojanowski at second. With two runners on base and two outs, Nelson singled home Trojanowski with Quaritsch moving to third and Nelson scampering to second on the throw. Brittany Snoreck’s (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) single drove in Nelson and Quaritsch. Sarb was the next batter and she singled to right and when the ball skipped past the Neumann fielder Snoreck was able to score from first.

Down 7-2, Neumann battled back and scored one run in the top of the sixth and three in the seventh before reliever Erica Aten (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) got the final out of the game.

Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.) got the start on the mound for the Vikings and she worked five innings, scattering seven hits while striking out two as she picked up the victory.
Trojanowski, Nelson and Sarb each had two hits for Augustana and Nelson picked up three runs-batted-in.
