2008-09 Season - First-half drought costs women's basketball team

WHEATON, Ill. – The Augustana women’s basketball team fell behind early and was never able to recover, falling 73-52 to Wheaton on Tuesday, February 10 in Wheaton, Illinois. The Vikings are now 3-19 overall and 1-10 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

The Thunder quickly jumped out to a 10-0 lead before a three point field goal by junior Kristen Fox (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) put the Vikings on the board at 15:30 of the first half. After sophomore Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) converted a free throw, Wheaton used a 9-0 run to grab a commanding lead, 19-4, just over 10 minutes into the contest. The Thunder coasted to a 35-14 advantage at intermission.

The Vikings played much better in the second half, fighting Wheaton to a 38-38 draw, but was unable to overcome the halftime deficit. Senior Sarah Rachwalski (Amos Alonzo Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.) came out firing in the second stanza, scoring nine points as the Vikings crept within 42-25 with 16:26 remaining. That was as close as Augustana would get the rest of the night as Wheaton maintained a healthy lead the rest of way for the conference victory.

Rachwalski converted 6-8 field goal attempts, including 1-2 from beyond the three point line, and also hit all four of her free throws to finish with a game-high 17 points. Four other Vikings finished with six points apiece and Fox led all players with nine rebounds.

Kelly Brooks came off the bench to spark the Thunder, scoring 14 points in only 14 minutes of action. Lynnea Kvam (13 points) and Kathleen Fidelia (12 points) were also in double figures for Wheaton.
