2009-10 Season - Megan Lonergan wins two events as Viking swimmers are in fourth place after opening day at Grinnell Invitational

– The Augustana women’s swimming team is in fourth place out of eight teams after the first day of competition at the Grinnell Invitational on Friday, January 16 in Grinnell, Iowa.  Luther leads the way with 311 points, followed by Grinnell (269), Macalester (177), and Augustana (118).  Nebraska-Kearney is fifth with 76 points with Coe (66), Morningside (49), and Simpson (20) completing the field.  The Viking men are in fifth place with 91 points.  Luther is in front with 365, Grinnell is second at 251, and Iowa Central CC is third with 139.  Macalester is one point ahead of Augustana with 92 points while Morningside and Coe are tied for the sixth spot, each with 61 points.

MEN: Senior Rob Emerson (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) led the men with a runner-up showing in the three meter diving event, scoring 327.40 points.  The Vikings were also strong in the 100 backstroke race where junior Eric Zike (Ridgeview HS, Colfax, Ill.) and senior Dan Betz (DeKalb HS, DeKalb, Ill.) both scored points.  Zike was eighth with a time of 1:01.46 with Betz close behind in ninth with a clocking of 1:01.84.  Betz also added a ninth place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:17.49).

Augustana scored points in three different relay races.  Freshman Mark Hillstrom (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.), junior Jake Glimco (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.), freshman Denny Wind (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and sophomore Drew Clinton (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Brookfield, Ill.) put together a sixth place finish in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 8:26.57.  Zike, senior Jason Perine (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.), Betz and sophomore Joseph Waldorf (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) grabbed the seventh spot in the 400 medley relay (4:01.38).  Clinton, Zike, Betz, and Waldorf rounded out the scoring for Augustana on the first day with a ninth place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (1:35.48).

WOMEN: Senior Megan Lonergan (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) came away with a pair of top finishes on the opening day of competition.  She won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:18.65 and earned another first place showing in the 200 butterfly, hitting the finish in 2:17.65.  Freshman Jessica Fair (Ashton-Franklin Center HS, Franklin Grove, Ill.) scored points for the Vikings with a fifth place performance in the 100 freestyle (:57.35) and sophomore Emily Cox (Pioneer HS, Ann Arbor, Mich.) took the eight spot in the 500 freestyle (5:41.89).  Sophomore Tonya Walter (Prospect HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) and junior Emma Moran (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) each earned ninth place finishes.  Walter scored 239.30 points in the one meter diving event while Moran finished with a time of 2:44.73.  Junior Sara Hlavin (St. Viator HS, Elk Grove Village, Ill.) scored in two events for Augustana, finishing 10th in the 200 individual medley (2:24.05) and 11th in the 100 backstroke (1:08.88).

The women also scored points in three of the relay events.  Fair, Hlavin, Cox, and Lonergan were fourth in the 800 freestyle relay with a clocking of 8:35.90.  The foursome also teamed up to finish sixth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:49.18).  Freshman Colleen Mans (Robbinsdale Cooper HS, New Hope, Minn.), senior Mary Galloway (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.), Moran, and freshman Alissa Giedd (Freeport HS, Cedarville, Ill.) combined to place 11th in the 400 medley relay (4:49.71).
