2008-09 Season - Late scoring lapse costly in women's basketball loss to Grinnell

Failure to score over the final 2:57 cost Augustana in a 57-52 non-conference loss to Grinnell on Saturday, January 3. The Vikings were trying to end the non-conference season with a victory heading into Tuesday’s College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin opener with defending league champion Illinois Wesleyan. For a while it looked like they might do just that when a basket by Lani Kasten (Forreston HS, German Valley, Ill.) gave Augustana a seven point lead (52-45) with 2:57 showing on the clock. Kasten had a chance for a three point play but missed the free throw and not much went right after that.

Grinnell outscored the Vikings 12-0 in the final three minutes, starting with a pair of free throws by Jessica Vaverka at 2:39 that cut the lead to 52-47. Jessica Shotts then nailed back-to-back three point field goals, the first at 2:01 to slice the margin to 52-50 and the second with :45 left to give the Pioneers a 53-52 lead. Augustana failed to convert after Shotts’ second three pointer and Jodi Watkins nailed two free throws with four seconds left and Brianna Gallo hit a pair with two seconds to play to account for the final margin.

Kristen Fox (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) led Augustana in scoring with 14 points and grabbed a game high 11 rebounds. She was the lone Viking in double figures in scoring. Augustana carved out a decisive 40-26 edge in the rebounding department.

Shotts was the leading scorer for Grinnell with 18 points while Mallory Scharf dropped in 13 points. Shotts and Scharf tied for the Pioneers’ team lead in rebounding with five each.

The game was tied at 43-43 with 7:21 left to play when Augustana went on a 9-2 run over the next 4:23 to take a seven point lead (52-45) with 2:57 remaining. In that run Fox had two baskets, Natalie Runge (St. Dominic HS, O’Fallon, Mo.) nailed a pair of free throws and Kasten had a basket.

Augustana fell to 2-9 on the season while Grinnell is now 2-8.
