2009-10 Season - Viking men swimmers are close second after opening day of Augustana Invitational

– The Augustana women’s swimmers have opened up a commanding lead and the men are a close second after the opening day at the Augustana Invitational in Rock Island, Illinois on Friday, December 5.  The women lead the eight team field with 346 points, 119 points ahead of second place Loras (227).  Coe is in third place (169) followed by Hannibal-LaGrange (131), Robert Morris (112), Eureka (31), Illinois College (4), and Iowa Central CC (1) to round out the women’s competition after the first day of the event.  The Augustana men are in second place with 309 points, only 15 points behind Iowa Central CC (324).  Loras is also in contention with 296 points.  Hannibal-LaGrange (50), Eureka (13), Coe (12), and Illinois College (2) complete the men’s list of squads.

MEN: Senior Rob Emerson (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) picked up first place points in the one meter diving event, finishing with a total of 252.05 points in the event.  Senior Ian Gustafson (Rockford Jefferson HS, Cherry Valley, Ill.) turned in a fine showing in the 200 butterfly, finishing second with a time of 2:28.90. 

Augustana demonstrated its overall depth with numerous third place finishes.  Freshman Michael Whittle (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) finished the 100 breaststroke with a clocking of 1:07.65, junior Eric Zike (Ridgeview HS, Colfax, Ill.) completed the 200 backstroke in 2:19.91, and freshman Kevin Cialdella (Lincoln Way East HS, Tinley Park, Ill.) swam the 200 butterfly in 2:32.31. 

The Vikings also had three relay teams turn in third place performances.  Sophomore Drew Clinton (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Brookfield, Ill.), freshman Denny Wind (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.), senior Danny Betz (DeKalb HS, DeKalb, Ill.), and Zike completed the 800 freestyle relay with a time of (8:14.54).  Zike, freshman Michael Whittle (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.), Betz, and Clinton hit the finish in 4:03.29 in the 400 medley relay.  Clinton, freshman Mark Hillstrom (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.), senior Jason Perine (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.), and Betz came through with a time of 1:35.83 in the 200 freestyle relay.

Sophomore Brian Tuinenga (Glenbard South HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) finished fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:38.52) and Betz and Clinton tied for the fourth spot in the 100 freestyle (:53.50).  Betz took fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:17.27).

WOMEN: Freshman Jessica Fair (Ashton-Franklin Center HS, Franklin Grove, Ill.) and senior Megan Lonergan (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) each won an individual event and also teamed together to win a relay title.  Fair earned the top spot in the 100 freestyle with a time of:56.86, while Lonergan swam past the competition in the 200 butterfly with a clocking of 2:18.68.  Fair opened the 800 freestyle relay with Lonergan anchoring the team to a victory in 8:30.14.  Sophomore Emily Cox (Pioneer HS, Ann Arbor, Mich.) and junior Sara Hlavin (St. Viator HS, Elk Grove Village, Ill.) swam the second and third legs of the event.

Fair was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.87) and Lonergan claimed the runner-up position in the 500 freestyle (5:27.10).  The Vikings also grabbed runner-up finishes in the 400 medley relay (4:27.49) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:47.70).  Cox, Hlavin, Fair, and Lonergan combined for the second place showings in both races.

Augustana continued its tremendous showing on the first day of competition with third place finishes from Hlavin in the 200 individual medley (2:23.36) and Cox in the 100 freestyle (:59.40).  Freshman Alissa Giedd (Cedarville HS, Freeport, Ill.) came through with fourth place performances in the 500 freestyle (6:05.25) and 100 freestyle (1:00.99).  Junior Emma Moran (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) earned a fifth place finish in the 200 butterfly with a clocking of 2:47.04.
